Back Water tours in Kumarakoam

by ieee

What i liked the most of all is the backwater tour in Kumarakoam and the visit to the bird watching. If you plan to see the birds dawn and dusk is the best time. Kumarakaom is about 1.5 hours from cochin and you can take a tour for any amount of time. There are people who rent house boats and spend their holiday on those serene boats

Cochin - the spice capital

by ieee

Cochin has several attractions - the Mantancherry palace, the Jewish synagogue (the first ever in india), the jew town, the Church (first church in india established by the Portugese), Vasco da gama’s grave, Bolgatty palace, chinese fishing nets (a thousand year old fishing technique taught by the chinese). I thought the tour of Cochin was ok, nothing very impressive but if this is your first time to india it is a nice introduction to the country

To be close to nature and wildlife -- there isn't a better place than this. There are tours available to get here. Avoid the peak season in january when a festival draws thousands of devotees to a temple in the hills

Anantha Padmanabhaswamy temple

by ieee

If you like to see the art from centuries ago, this is one nice temple to visit. This is a hindu temple - they have a strict dress code (although, the dress is available at the temple) and no photography is allowed inside the temple. You do not have to be a Hindu to enter this temple. However, you are expected to not disrespect anything in the temple. I liked the sculpture in the temple. There were thousands of idols of women holding lamps in their hands and i could imagine how bright the temple would have been with all the lamps lit during nights.

Kovalam Beach

by ieee

This beach is world famous and for a reason! There will be a lot of people around and if you are someone like me who does not mind the bustle around you, then u will enjoy the serene beach and the beautiful sunsets. We drove from the city of Trivandrum, stopping on the way to see what I thought was a coconut plantation but happens to be just the birds eye view of a small town with each house having several coconut trees.

Patayani

by ushar

Patayani is a week- long ritual dance, held in Kaali temples on the banks of the Pamba river during the Malayalam months of Meenam and Medam (March - April). The choice theme of the dancers is the slaying of the demon Daarikan by the goddess Kaali. The steps and movements of the dance vary according to each Kolam or character. Thappu is the major percussion instrument accompanied by a few Chendas. Patayani masks are made with the fresh spathe of arecanut palms. Bhairavi (Bhadrakaali), Yakshi, Pakshi (bird) and Kaalari (Siva) are the main characters. Various communities targetted for criticism are represented by jestures. Kadammanitta, Kadalimangalam and Othara in Pathanamthitta district are famous for annual Patayani performances.

Theyattu - The Ritual Art form of Kerala

by ushar

Theeyattu is a solo dance-drama performed in front of the Kalam or Dhooli Chitram (ritual drawing with coloured powders). It is enacted in some Bhagavathy temples of Thiruvalla, Kottayam, Thripunithura and neighbouring areas. The ritual starts with the invocation of Lord Ganapathy, Lord Siva and goddess Saraswathy, after which the performer dons a crown smaller but similar to the one used in Mudiyettu. The most popular story narrated through a Theeyattu performance is that of the duel between goddess Kaali and the demon Daarikan. The dance form is usually performed by a small group of temple bound communities called the Unni. Theeyattu is still a ritual offering made every Friday at the Pallippurathu Kaavu temple near Kottayam town.
