Coconut: Uses of..... Wood and leaves

by suvanki

The wooden trunk is used in house building mainly, also in handicrafts and for burning for fuel. The leaves are used in roofing, often being thatched, as fencing, and also in handicrafts (woven into baskets etc). The leaves can also be wielded into sweeping brooms.Towards the end of my holiday, I was often woken by the sound of these large leaves falling to the ground, with a whoosh, and a thud!

Coconut Groves (2) Harvesting

by suvanki

The coconuts are collected by men who climb the trees at speed and with a surprising agility, aided by what looked like thin strips of leaves, looped around their feet and the tree .They throw the coconuts to the floor, to be collected, and carried to a nearby clearing. The nut is then separated from its outer covering. This procedure appears to require a certain amount of strength and dexterity, as the plant is thrust onto a sharp blade buried in the ground. With a series of pushes and twists, the nut is released. The outer covering and nut are placed in seperate piles, to be transported for further treatment.

Pulikali is a popular folk art performed during the Onam season. In Pulikali a group of performers paint their whole body in the likeness of tigers and wear tiger mask. They prance about, dance and move like tigers. The tigers are accompanied by a hunter and a drummer. The theme of the play is tiger hunting. The Swaraj ground in Thrissur district is the venue of a grand Pulikali on the fourth Onam day. On this day Pulikali troups from different parts of the district come here to perform.

Varkala Beach

by msforbes

Varkala Beach is my favorite comercial beach that I've been to in India. As georgous as Goa was, there were just too many damn hippies there for me to enjoy myself. My last week in India was spent of Varkala Beach, and I couldn't think of a better place to say "See you soon." to the country. Most accomidation close to the beach charged 150 rupees for a room.

The River Boat Cruise

by msforbes

That is one of the first things that visiters do when they reach this part of India. A couple of the more popular ones are 8 hours costing around 150-200 rupees. I went on a 2.5 hour ride. It was a public boat that took people to and fro their homes, and town. This ride took me from Kollem to Alepy. The cost was 6 rupees. From the train station in Kollem, I was greeted by two jolly policemen. "Your good name, sir?" they asked me, they shook my hand, and introduced themselves, and asked where I was from. They then took me just a few steps to my ferry, and wished me a pleasent stay in Kerala. Then again, police here in Toronto do the same thing.

They dress you down to the T, make you wear some sort of a loin-cloth ... and two masseurs, in unision, almost perfectly, their fingers performing deft ballets on your body, massage you in a ready mix of ancient oils and baths.

Jew Town, Fort Kochi

by msforbes

2000 year old Jewish quarter has the oldest functioning synagogue in the Commonwealth. Also the streets are full of very interesting shops. There are some that really make me wonder just how they obtained such merchandise. Mostly stuff you expect to see in a place of worshop.

Vypyn Island, Kochi

by msforbes

Ferries shuttle across the narrow strait from Fort Kocki to Vypin Island. The island is nice and relaxing for the regular hustle and bustle of urban India. It has a lighthouse, and the Pallepuran Fort, built in 1403 by the Portuguese is one of the oldest European monuments in India.
