UNTAPPED BEAUTY SPOT OF KERALA –KAPPIL

by ushar

Kerala is blessed with a large number of water bodies, including lakes, rivers and back waters. Sandy beaches, lush green forests and verdant hills add to the luster of this land. Have you ever thought of having a lake-front get-away, that too in full view of the Arabian Sea? Would you like to swim a couple of lengths in the lake under a bright tropical sun and also savor a tall cool glass of your favorite drink on the shore? Are you interested in using a rod to fish in the lake, or would you rather accompany the local fishermen during their daily activity of fishing? A drive of 40 Km from Trivandrum along the NH 47 will take you to Kallabalam. Turn to the left and proceed another 13 Km, you will see the breath taking beauty of Mother Nature in all her splendor. On one side of the road, you see the waves of Arabian sea. On the other side, you will meet the placid waters of Paravoor...

Kerala's cuisine is an absolute delight and it is drawing tourists in droves to learn the state's rich variety of food. Operators offer cookery lessons to hone culinary skills for the difficult to pronounce names of Kerala's tongue twisting traditional food, known for its simplicity and variety.Travel agents have tied up with many enterprising entrepreneurs for whom cookery is a passion and they are taking lessons for guests.

Hill Stations in Kerala - A quick Glance

by ushar

While Kerala is immediately identified with beautiful beaches and backwaters, there's more to Kerala than golden sun, white sand and blue sea. As you move further in from the coast on your Kerala Tour with Kerala Backwater and leave the beaches and backwaters behind, you will find the roads winding upwards along the Western Ghats that are the hill ranges in Kerala. Kerala has many beautiful hill stations. Not only are these beautiful destinations they are also the source of the famous spices of Kerala. Spices such as pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and the cashew nut have been grown in plantations on these hill stations in Kerala, for centuries. Cash crops such rubber and tea were introduced by the Dutch and English colonial rulers of Kerala in the 18th and 19th centuries, when they realized these plants could grow in the tropical climate of Kerala.1. Beaches of Kerala- A Quick Glance

by ushar

Kerala is known throughout the world as one of the world's best beach destinations. The beaches of Kerala are beautiful stretches of clean sand, fringed by swaying palm trees on one side and rippling waves on the other. Relax on the golden sands of the beaches of Kerala, stretch out in the shade of the rows of palm trees along the beaches, drink the refreshing juice of a tender coconut and have an ayurvedic masseur.1. Kovalam Beach: Consisting of three crescent shaped beaches, called Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra Beaches, Kovalam is one of the best beaches in Kerala with golden sand, waving palm trees and rolling waves. Have fun at Kovalam on Kerala beach tours with Kerala Backwater.Kovalam, is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Kerala. 2. Varkala Beach: Located 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Varkala Beach is a calm sandy beach with a background of rocky cliffs. Known as the...

Varkala Beach

by suvanki

About 40km north of Trivandrum, is the beach resort of Varkala. The beach is reached by climbing down steps from the top of the steep cliff face. ( probably not to be recommended for those with walking/breathing difficulties) The cliffs/ beach have experienced accidents that have been alcohol related, so officially Varkala is a 'dry' resort. If you want an alcoholic beverage, have a quiet word with your waiter!!The long white sandy beach and softly sloping waters edge, makes this a good place for swimming/ relaxing. It appeared to be a lot quieter than the beaches of Kovalam.Ayurveda, yoga, massage etc can be experienced.Kathakali performances can be seen Dec - January. At the top of the cliffs are a variety of cafes/ restaurants, tourist info, money exchange and shops. (One selling Tibetan goods) Taxi and tuk tuk ranks nearby.motorbike hire also availableAccommodation from budget to more...

Sunset Backwaters Cruise

by suvanki

This trip set off from Kovalam, but I'm sure its possible to arrange similar cruises from other towns. We set off about 1500 hours, spending time being punted around the rivers and canals. We gently floated through stunning scenery, and past villages, as birds soared ahead, and schoals of fish leapt out of the water briefly.A stop was made to see the Temple Elephant , before heading off the main river, and into a narrow channel , where low hanging branches brushed overhead. It was quite dark and eerie, especially as we neared the Parasuraman Temple, and heard music drifting towards us.We then entered the temple, where our guide produced banana leaves, wrapped around flower petals, with a paste, that he applied to our foreheads.I felt a bit awkward, walking around , while women were worshipping, but it was a rare opportunity to see inside a temple. We left donations, then returned to our...

Rubber Plantations

by suvanki

Leaving the coconut groves of the lowlands, venturing further inland and to higher grounds, rubber trees abound. The sap is collected by 'tapping' the tree, cutting grooves past the bark, then the liquid rubber drains into cups. This is then pressed into squares and hung to dry. It may then be treated with chemicals. Along the roadside its easy to spot the rubber plantations and these squares of thick rubber hanging to dry..theres quite a distinctive smell too!The rubber is exported for many uses. The Keralan rubber industry became very prosperous in recent years, with the increased demand for condoms!!

Spice Plantations/Gardens

by suvanki

A lot of the spices that you use in your cooking are grown here in Kerala....So it's a good chance to see them in their natural state and learn about how they are grown etc..Away from the coastal areas, travel out to the area around Periyar, Kumily etc. Here you'll find family run spice gardens/plantations and shops/markets selling packaged spices.Cardamom is the Queen of spices, Pepper is The King!! Ginger, coriander, cumin, cloves, aniseed, vanilla, nutmeg, turmeric, tamarind, fenugreek, cinnamon and more besides can be seen in their natural environment, and can be bought quite cheaply, and all are excellent quality! Also herbs such as basil, curry leaves etc. Please see my Periyar pages for more details

Spending time with elephants -

by suvanki

During my trip in 2004, this was a newly opened 'tourist attraction' in Kerala - a trip to spend time with elephants. I did this trip through Manos travel, but I'm sure this can be arranged independently too.Just ask at your hotel reception, or a taxi driver. The village of Chirakarathazham is the place to head for.Originally the 18 strong herd were hired out for temple festivals, but their owner realised there was an opening for tourists to enjoy time spent with these creatures. In the first 2 months of this project over 400 visitors arrived. This has opened up tourism to the area, bringing in money to the village. We had the chance to feed the elephants (lots of (Whole bunches of) bananas), then the mahouts introduced us to the elephants, before we were offered the chance for some bare back riding, just a short ride, about 5-10 mins, but you could probably ask for longer ,depending on the...
