rock garden

by keralatourist

This garden is one and only one of its kind, the uniqueness is in the fact that almost all the art forms in this garden are made of waste materials like broken glass, broken ceramics, natural colors etc. and one will be in awe if you see this unique garden. This garden is situated in malampuaha dam which is 7 kms from palakkad town which is 150 kms from cochin.travellers coming from chennai or tamilnadu can get down at palakkad for a 2-3 days trip.the main attractions are rock garden in malampuzha dam, nelliyampathy hills and ayurveda. palakkad is the home of ayurveda and many eminent organisations with over 100 years of service are situated in the nearby towns.

Kovalam

by lazuli

There isn't very much, if at all to do in Kovalam apart from walking along the beach, sunbathe or try & swim which is virtually impossible. The sea is so strong i recommend that all should wear very secure swimwear, trust me!!!I recommend that Kovalam be used as a base. It's a short journey by rickshaw or taxi to Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, where you can catch trains to anywhere that takes your fancy. The off beat places can be reached by taxi for resonable fee, we paid 500rps to go to The Wooden Palace, some temples & Kanniyakumari.

Kerala-Gods own country

by mallyak

Start your journey from the capital Thiruvanthapuram. Not much to see except the Anantha Padmanaswamy temple closed to non hindusbut worth viewing from the outside.I took a local KRTC Bus to Kumily town to vist the famous periyar Tiger forest reserve. This reserve is a rare example of human interference having enhanced rather than damaged an ecosystem.Stay at kumily town and take a early morning walk to the reserve in Thekkady about 30 minutes ot catckh an Auto.Take a boat which will ferry you into the reserve .Early morning or at sunset is the most likey time to catch elephants. From kumilly town it is easy to book a jeep tour of the spice plantations and visit villages.a long bus ride through some spectacular scenary took me to the town of Kottayam were just an overnight stay , I took a local ferry to allepy for the sum of rs16/-(1997)!The ferry ride was wonderful with locals school...

Tellicherry, The early British base

by Justin_goa

Thalassery , also known as Tellicherry, is a town on the Malabar Coast of Kerala, in South India. The British established their presence in Kerala in 1682, when they obtained permission from the Vadakkilamkur Prince of Kolattunad, to settle at Thalassery. In the following years, the British presence in the state of Kerala strengthened. During this period, there were many organised revolts held by the natives of the region against the empire. Among them was the revolt of 1704, that the natives of Thalassery organised, but this revolt was quickly crushed by the British forces due to its localised, non-nationalistic nature. The British built a seaport in Tellicherry through which a variety of spices such as pepper and cardamom were exported. (Tellicherry pepper, ground from locally grown pungent black peppercorns, is much sought after by chefs around the world). In 1708, the British built...

Kurisumala a trekker’s delight!!

by Justin_goa

Amrithamedu, popularly known as Kurisumala is a pilgrim center as well as a trekker’s delight. Peerumedu is the nearest major town from which you can approach Amrithamedu.During Easter, pilgrims climb the ‘Stations of the Cross’, which would require a pilgrim to cover 14 points, with each point having a cross denoting various phases of Jesus Christ’s last journey. During the course of the trek, when one reaches the third cross, a good stretch of Peerumedu becomes visible, which is indeed an enjoyable sight. One can also see tea estates in the distance and also the rolling Kokkad hills. As one proceeds further up, the surrounding landscape soon becomes more and more breathtaking. Once the climb reaches the ninth cross, one would step on to a plateau and the mist that engulfs you at this place is quite an experience. This is Amrithamedu, the highest point in Kuttikkanam region. For avid...

First settlement of English East India Company

by Justin_goa

Anjuthengu (Anjengo) Situated 40 Kms, north of Thiruvananthapuram along the sea cost, Anjuthengu (Anjengo) is a place of historic importance. It was here that the first settlement of the English East India Company was established in 1864 A.D. According to the local folk, the limited area where five coconut palms stood (Anjuthengu - Anjengo) was given on lease to the company by the then ruling prince of Travancore for trade purposes. The remains of the old English Fort which had withstood many a siege can be seen here even now.

Champakulam Boat Race in June

by Justin_goa

The boat race season of Kerala begins with the Champakulam Vallamkali (vallamkali in Malayalam means boat race) one of the most popular boat races of the State. The highlights of this magnificent event include a ceremonial procession on the water, spectacular water floats, decorated boats and, of course, the regal Chundanvalloms (snake boats) (so called because the stern resembles the raised hood of a snake), each 100 feet long. Event Date : June 30, 2007
