Chinese Fishing Nets

by ajayzener

The Chinese fishing nets, also called Cheena Vala is mainly found in the Fort Cochin area of Kochi. Very huge nets of sizes reanging from 20-30 m are held on by huge mechanical contrivances. These structures are more than 12m in height and has a cantilever attached with a net suspended over the sea or the lake and balanced by the stones on the other end. These nets are operated by a group of fishermen. The scene is more beautiful during the dusk. You can also see these installations in various places apart from Fort Kochi.

Tasty Bananas

by ajayzener

One thing that I love about kerala is the variety of bananas. I am thrilled by the sight of different banana's which come in green, yellow and red colours. The sizes vary too from some which are the size of your finger to others which are the size of your arm. They also taste so different. And yeah... don't forget to taste the banana chips.

House Boat - Kumarakom / Vembanad Kayal

by ajayzener

If you want to enjoy more of the backwaters and the lakes of kerala, one of the costly options is to spent a night in the houseboat. These boats are fully equipped, normall have two bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining space and a lobby from where you can watch the banks as you pass by. The rooms come with a/c and tvs too. There will be a caretaker and a cook at your service and you can taste the fresh catch of the day. The food is amazing and customised and the trip an unbeleiveable experience. In the night the boats are anchored almost in the middle of the lake, where you can see the small fishing boats with small lanterns waiting for the catch. If you are lucky to be there on a full moon night then the beauty is unmatched. In the morning you can see the sun coming up through the palmgroves far away from the bank, another breath taking moment. Overall a wonderful experience.

Visit the Gods

by ajayzener

Any where in kerala within a kilometers range you will find small temples, people worship the dieties here. Unlike the famous temples these are only frequented by the localites and hence it is a calm and serene place to be in, far from the vendors and the tourist guides. These temples also have their histories and the architecture may be splendid in some of them. You may be present for the puja in the mornings and evenings when the smell of the camphor, the sound of the bells and the chanting of matras may take you to a different world altogather.

A dip in the river

by ajayzener

Whereever you are in kerala, take time off to go to the nearest river. Taking a dip or rather a lavish bath in the clean and cool waters of the river. You will find yourself close to the local people. If you are not a good swimmer then it is better to take with you someone who knows the river well. You will find all day to day activities being conducted at the river banks, like puja's, kids bathing, ladies washing their utensils. If you are intereseted , then there are places where you can swim all alone and be one with the nature. The opportunities are plenty for the one who needs it.

A Boat Ride

by ajayzener

One thing that you cannot miss out while in kerala is the Boat Ride. You can either take the motorboat or the normal "Vallom", or if you want to mingle with the crowd then the passenger boat. Whatever may be your choice, you will be able to see the life near the backwaters. The ride can also bring you close to the kerala culture. As you go interiors you can meet more friendly malayalees and also come to know of how they earn their living. Overall it is a mersmerising ride. You can spent the entire day on the boat depending on the choice that you make. The best locations would be the Allapuzha District (Kuttanad) and Kollam district.

Munnar - A Paradise

by ajayzener

Munnar - breathtakingly beautiful - a haven of peace and tranquility - the idyllic tourist destination in God's own country. Set at an altitude of 6000 ft in Idukki district, Munnar was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. Unending expanse of tea plantations - pristine valleys and mountains- exotic species of flora and fauna in its wild sanctuaries and forests - aroma of spice scented cool air - yes! Munnar has all these and more. It's the place you would love to visit - it's the place you would wish never to leave.

Backwaters Tour

by GlobeTrottin

Kerala Backwaters are incredibly serene. The weather is perfect, the gentle wind blowing. This is a must-do.The guides are generally English-speaking (Kerala has an amazing rate of literacy in all of India). Definitely get off of the boat and step unto the small beaches. We met some local children who were hoping for pens (not money!), and I wish I had brought some.

Mateer Memorial Church - This is my church

by Justin_goa

The Mateer Memorial Church, situated in the heart of the city of Trivandrum, is one of the oldest of its kind in South India. Our Church was dedicated on the first day of December 1906 and we are now celebrating its Centenary. The history of the Protestant Missions in South Kerala begins with the arrival of William Tobias Ringeltaube on 25 April 1806 at Mylaudy near Cape Comorin. As missionary work was already started in Tranquebar, a Danish colony, Ringeltaube travelling in a Danish ship arrived at Tranquebar, invited by Vedamanikan Maharasan the first convert from this region. Travancore was then a native state under British protection ruled by its Maharaja. It was with great difficulty and largely through the intervention of the British Resident in Travancore, Colin Macaulay, that Ringeltaube obtained permission to construct a Church at Mylaudy. In May 1809 the foundation stone was...

Don't miss to watch Kathakali

by Justin_goa

Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world. It originated in the area of southwestern India now known as the state of Kerala. Kathakali is a group presentation, in which dancers take various roles in performances traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The technique of Kathakali includes a highly developed language of gesture, through which the artist can convey whole sentences and stories. The body movements and footwork are very rigourous. To attain the high degree of flexibility and muscle control required for this art, a Kathakali dancer undergoes a strenuous course of training, and special periods of body massage. The orchestra of a Kathakali performance includes two drums known as the chenda and the maddalam, along with cymbals and another percussion instrument, the ela taalam. Normally, two...
