Onam, the biggest festival of Kerala is nearing and Kerala Tourism has announced a series of events to celebrate the occasion. Announcing this in Thiruvananthapuram, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, said that the annual week-long Onam festival organised by the Department of Tourism will be renamed as 'Onam Celebrations'. The main venue of the celebrations in the capital city will be the Kanakakkunnu Palace campus. A food festival and Trade Fair is also proposed to be organised here. This year, Onam festival will be held in local levels also. Committees will be formed for the purpose with the MLAs concerned as chairmen. Private agencies can also join as sponsoring agencies in the event. The East Fort-Vellayambalam stretch in Thiruvananthapuram will be illuminated on a large scale. Kumarakom - Country Boat Ride

by LifeIsAJourney

It's just a feeling, not to be put in words. It's much, much beyond the feeling that you get in a motor boat or speedboat. Early morning/Late evening is the best time to go. It's just you, your loved one and the boatman, silently wading through tranquil waters, watching the mermerising verdant landscape. It's just too romantic (it's like you are asked to define love and you cannot just frame the sentences). Take a visit to the Bird Sanctuary in the country boat in the early morning. Observe the boatman as he uses a long pole to push the boat forward (when the water depth is low), and uses the usual oar when depth is more (about > 10 feet). I was fortunate to watch our boatman catch a "karimeen" fish, one of the delicacies in kerala, when we sighted one.

Hire a houseboat on the backwaters

by Lis4lou

we took a taxi and drove to Allepey and spent two days and a night cruising on the backwaters The backwaters comprise a network of both natural and man-made canals which interconnect to form the life blood of the community which flourishes along its banks. The boats themselves are beautiful and contain bedroom, ensuite, dining area and kitchen. Along with the boat came our crew: the chef; the engineer and the captain. The Houseboats although purely for the tourists are a distinctive feature of Kerala. We saw people washing clothes, dishes, themselves and even their teeth in the murky river. At one point during our houseboat trip we sailed past a small group of children who sat along with their teacher under a tented area. Everyone waved as we sailed past and we were able to throw pens and writing pads onto the banks. I will never forget how a little girl dressed in a bright yellow dress...

Kovalam Fishermen

by Lis4lou

One morning we joined the fishermen at dawn on Light House Beach. We were fascinated by the traditional methods employed by these men. Moving the mango wood boats down to the shore takes the efforts of the whole team and an hour has passed by the time the small boat and its crew struggles its way against the surf into deeper waters. Laden with nets attached to ropes, the boat sails out a mile from shore. To make the most of the time those men left ashore mend nets and weave coconut palm tents in which ropes and nets are stored. Two fishermen leave the boat and swim to shore bringing with them the ropes which are then hauled along with the nets and the precious catch onto the beach. As the fishermen haul in the nets they sing to keep their combined efforts in time.

Kanyakumari - A trip to Land's End and more ...

by Lis4lou

Take a trip to Land's End. On the way stop at the wooden palace and the temple at Suchindram. At Land's End we visited the Kanyakumari temple where an alter has been built on a rocky outcrop to honour the footprint (YES - the footprint) of the virgin, Kanya Devi (aka Parvati). Kanya was betrothed to Shiva but on the happy day he was misled into thinking he has missed his own wedding and he returned home before he reached Kanya at Kanyakumari. The story goes that the heartbroken Kanya Devi pledged that she would stay at Kanyakumari where she would remain for the rest of her life a virgin. This temple along with the Vivekananda memorial, is only accessible from the shore by a ferry boat. The highlight of the trip was a tour around the Stanunathaswami temple at Suchindram. The temple itself took over 600 years to build and in part dates back to the ninth or tenth century. Inside you will...

trivandrum & Varkala Festivals

by Lis4lou

There are festivals happening in India every few days. Mostly they are based around the Hindu faith. Make friends with a Taxi driver or as we did, a rickshaw driver as they have local knowledge of what to do and where to go. Besides this, you pay half the price of the tour operator AND you can be sure that your money is going directly to the local community. The festival at the Krishna, Janardhana temple in Varkala involved 50 elephants each one wearing gold headresses with multicoloured tassles extending down their trunks. The oldest elephant was 44 years old. The experience was humbling as the local community wholeheartedly welcomed our intrusion to their celebration. As the elephants waited patiently for an hour or so for the parade to begin we were able to go very close to them and speak to their handlers. The Elephant parade was accompanied by a traditional drumming troup. This in...

Fishermen, Kovalam

by suvanki

One of my happiest memories of my holiday was of the fishermen, working in teams, singing as they hauled in the catch!Around about 11.00 hrs is the best time to catch this activity on Lighthouse Beach.Over night , or in the early hours, 2 boats travel out to sea, then spread a net between the 2 boats. The nets are then trawled in,in a semi - circular pattern, and the fishermen end the process by pulling on the ropes, so that any fish caught in the nets, eventually end up scooped up on the beach in the nets.To be continued...
