20 years on from the world's worst chemical disaster, the remains of the Union Carbide factory is still killing of disguring thousands. It is estimated that up to 20,000 may have died from the effects of the explosion (8,000 on the day, 12,000 following) and up to 150,000 afected in various ways. Birth defects, cancers and other problems are still life. Union carnides new owners (Dow Chemicals) admit no liability whatsoever.
The groundwater in the area may be affected for several miles. Anybody with any sense always buys bottlewater in Idia anyway, but be especially careful here to make sure you don't recieve ice, or eat salds that may have been washed in local water.
