After arriving in Jhansi on the train, I took an auto rickshaw to the bus station where I got directed to a really old rickety looking bus that was heading to Orchha. The bus was really full, as they tend to be, and I managed to find room on the back seat for my backpack whilst I stood on the steps by the back entrance surrounded by large bags of rice or something that were stacked almost to the ceiling. We stopped a few times along the way just to get the bus even more crowded but I enjoyed it in a kind of twisted way. At one point a guy was hanging off the back outside! At one point a nice clean new looking tourist but was following us in the distance and I just imagined air conditioning, one person per reclining seat and such like and smiled at myself for thinking of how the other half travels whilst touring India! Oh well, it was only for 20-odd minutes. I took a tempo, (a larger version of an auto rickshaw), in Orchha back to Jhansi so that I could get a bus to Khajuraho.

Auto Rickshaw to Orchha.
At the crossroad of the road from Khajuraho - Jhansi, there is a road to Orchha.
Local price is 10 rupees but you have to sit in lovely crowded rickshaw like this.
In that day, 15 people in rickshaw, my ribs almost broken because of too crowded. :)
I paid 20 rupees from crossroad to Orchha.
and 10 rupees from Orchha to Jhansi.

It's part of the railway line between Delhi, Agra, Bhopal and Mumbai. Great experience to travel with a 'colonial' train. Not much luxury on board, not even in executive class.
Price about 700 Rs from Agra to Jhansi in 2 hours...
From Jhansi to Orchha it is less then 18 km. Bad road conditions and some interesting places to stop, makes it a one hour drive...

You can catch tempo’s (3 wheeled vehicles) or auto-rickshaws from Jhansi and there are even taxi’s but around Orchha itself, it is easy just walking.

The nearest train station to Orchha is Jhansi, some 16kms away. The express trains stop at Jhansi and the trains run on the Mumbai-Delhi and the Delhi-Madras lines travel this route.
