Although the Ajanta caves were abandoned centuries ago, many Buddhist pilgrims make the journey here and worship at these temples and monasteries. The attached photo I took in the portico of Cave 21 of a group of a friendly Buddhist pilgrims. Seeing them really helped me visualise the Ajanta Caves in their heyday when they were inhabited by Buddhist monks and gave a sense of continuity to the site.

The Ajanta site is filled with black-faced monkeys such as the one in the attached photograph. It is generally advisable not to feed the monkeys directly for they could get aggressive and attack.
