Aurangabad is famous for its Himroo shawls and sarees. There is a factory that is on the way back from Daultabad Fortress/Ellora. This is NOT the place we went to. (I think that is the "tourist" place.) We asked our driver and he brought us to a store in Aurangabad.
Himroo is an age old art of weaving that originated in Aurangabad. We were shown the huge looms and saw work in progress. Real Himroo is woven with pure gold or silver threads and a real Himroo saree can sell for many thousands of dollars.
Himroo from Aurangabad is in high demand for its unique style and design. There are few Himroo weavers left. The shawls ran about $60. We made a few purchases of beautifully designed cotton sarees (not the “real” Himroo) before leaving.

This shop has a few artisans who are using original hand looms, weaving this beautiful fabric. Most himroo cloth today is mass-produced by power-looms.It is a blend of silver thread, cotton & silk. We watched the hand- weaving process, the dexterity of the weavers hands was quite something.....so nimble & quick.
We were served chai by the owner-no doubt an inducement to stay longer, although I needed no persuasion to linger. There was so much to see. This shop had fabric of colors & textures I had not seen elsewhere in India.
What to buy: Lengths of cloth, Shawls. Bed covers. Wall Hangings. Hand woven bags.
What to pay: Most items are average price. The store that I mentioned had fixed prices, although we were offered a "discount". The cost, however, is minimal, compared to the beauty of the product.
