If you are a foreigner avoid travelling by buses and trains at peak/rush hours.
they are the cheapest mode of transport in the world.
autorickshaws / taxis are also cheap. ask them to produce the tariff card to verify the
bill
they charge.they normally rip off foreigners.
do not drink unpackaged water/ food stuff from street vendors.( you probably do not
have the immunity that we do )
bars / pubs are generally the cooling places for mafia/ underworld/ shady elements ,
so better avoid them.same case with movie theatres.
better take a guided tour organised by your hotels.
emergency services are almost absent . do not expect police/ambulance / fire brigade
to arrive immediately.
people will follow you on the streets, they are curious about foreigners, you can ignore
them.
buy lots of garments , leather goods, handicrafts , jewellery . they are very cheap in
Mumbai
Restaurants in Mumbai do not serve beef and pork as Hindus do not eat cow and
muslims dont eat pork.
chicken and lamb/goat as well as fish would be available in plenty.
Hindi, Marathi are the commonly spoken langauages. people from all over India live in
Mumbai so other languages like gujrati, tamil, bengali , telugu, kannada are also
spoken by these communities.
All educated people also speak english though pronounciations may be very
different.write down things if people dont understand what you say.

some good restuarants:

Viva paschim -- excellent sea food
goa portugesa--excellent sea food
copper chimney
kohinoor-opposite siddhivinayak temple

Places around Mumbai to see:all these places are within 2-4 hours by bus/kokan
railway from mumbai and well connected.

Beaches:
------------------

Favorite thing: Visit the Elephanta caves which are just off the coast of Bombay. There are boats leaving every half hour from the Gateway of India. Which brings us to the latter. The Gateway of India was built to welcome the King of England when the British ruled India. Details are inscribed in the stone.

Favorite thing: Few visitors to Mumbai are aware that it is the only metropolis in the world with 104 square kilometers of virgin forest within its borders. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, better known as the Borivli National Park, offers a pleasant change from the usual sights and attractions of the big city.

Favorite thing: On a Sunday morning we decided to go to this small hill station Jawhar, which is around four and half hours away from Bombay by road. This is a small town with friendly people and the best place to buy the vibrant and earthy Warli Paintings painted by the tribals of the region.
