pollon 686 reviews

In big stores like the Shop No. 12, Indian Mercantile Mansion, Wodehouse Road - opposite Regal Cinema prices aren't to be bargained and in this store in particular I found them very low.

Prices a little bit higher but a wider choice at The Bombay Store, Sir P.M. Road, Fort

What to buy: palm leaf painting
silk painting
gem stone stationery
wood desk accessories
hand made paper
papier-mache objects
and much MUCH more!!

Mumbai Tea Centre

The Tea Centre apart from being a refined place where to have a cup of tea, a snack, or a meal has also an attached shop where maybe at higher prices compared to the other ones you can find in Mumbai but I paid 55 Rs. (less than 1 euro) for a package of 100 gr. and you can choose among: Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, that's the FTGFOP Darjeeling, Assam, green teas, flavoured teas included a masala tea which I bought and have nicknamed the tea with the "tea with the smell of India", Oolong, Kashmiri and Nilgiri.

Designer's Choice: Indian clothing
pollon profile photo
pollon 686 reviews

Designer's Choice sells Indian clothing and even if my master of bargaining said I should have discussed longer the price and reduce it further, I was very satisfied with the panjabi dress (loose trousers tightened at the waist and the ankles and on them a long tunic) I bought and then an Indian woman praised my purchase ;-)..

Lots of local and Indian gifts for souvenirs made by local craftsmen and artists for the tourism industry at cheap prices for good artworks!!! Very helpful staff and courteous service!!! Small shop with big bargain prices!!!

What to buy: Hand painted artwork on wood, silk, cloth or paper. Wooden handicrafts, pillboxes, jewellery boxes and souvenirs handcrafted and designed by village craftsmen from all over India!!! Palm leaf paintings / etchings with carvings too!!! Filigree work. Handwoven materials for dresses, shawls, etc. Postcards and all kinds of small and big souvenirs available at good prices for the tourist!!! Not like most other shops where they fleece the tourists!!!

What to pay: From as low as Rs30 for a handpainted silk cloth painting (well worth that price) to anything like Rs300 to 500 for many big and excellent souvenir / gift items that you would not get for that price anywhere else!!!

Strand Book Stall: Best book shop in Mumbai!!!
aadil profile photo

4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

aadil 193 reviews

One of the most famous and reader oriented book shops in Mumbai started by the defatiguable Mr. Shanbag who started with an actually small stall in the erstwhile Strand movie theatre near Colaba, now shifted to the more spacious (still small) premises at Sir PM Road. All kinds of books and magazines are available on order at the greatest discounts possible in this field!!! The staff are very helpful and go about doing business but are more like a friend rather than shop owners!!!

Their once in a year sale of books is a geat bargain for here you will get books at upto 80% discounts and well worth the effort of going through all the books at your own free time!!! No questions asked and no strange looks or staring eyes!!! So go pick up lots of bargain books and enjoy the lost art of reading (books) in this internet age!!!

What to buy: BOOOOOOOOKS!!!!! What else!!! Well alright, you may find some music CD's as well at discount prices!!! And the best collection of travel guides too!!!

What to pay: Most books are at discounted prices and are also available by post!!!

Interior

If what your looking for is ethnic Indian stuff, The Bombay Store is the only place to go. It has everything from Rugs to Leather Goods, all made in India at very reasonable prices.
I've always liked the wood statues and ornaments, they even carry ethnic Indian clothing is your heart so desires.
This is a Govt. / co-operative owned store and by buying here you are encouraging and empowering cottage industry in India.

What to buy: The Hand Crafted Ornaments and curios make prefect gifts for those back home as well as great memories and symbols of your trip to India.

What to pay: Mostly everything here is well priced. You'll see almost all of the same stuff you'd find at the hotel stores but at half the price. It's where the locals go for ethnic handicrafts.
