I am lucky enough to work in Colaba, and often when I get some time I do visit the local artifacts shops around the place. I know this place quite well and its definitely worth a visit if you are serious into some handicrafts and artifacts shopping in Mumbai.

Plus point about this shoppe is that it is spacious, and at the heart of south Mumbai nearby the Gateway of India.

    Open Hours: 10am -6pm

Authentic Indian Jewellery, crafts and exotic Sarees. Ideal place to buy souvenirs.

The rates are fixed here and quite reasonable.

  • Directions: Take Bus No 132 from Churchgate and get down at Electric House Stop at Colaba. Also Taxis are available from Churchgate or VT railway Stations. The best thing is that is nearby the Gateway of India.

Designer's Choice sells Indian clothing and even if my master of bargaining said I should have discussed longer the price and reduce it further, I was very satisfied with the panjabi dress (loose trousers tightened at the waist and the ankles and on them a long tunic) I bought and then an Indian woman praised my purchase ;-)..

Colaba Causeway Road, which is now renamed Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg), is a good place to shop for clothes. Western shops such as Woodland, Reebok, Wrangler and Levi's are located here plus there's loads of stalls running down one side of the road selling the usual stuff you find in Indian markets.

    Mumbai-Shopping
Shopping in Mumbai is a memorable experience as you wander through its Bazaars with striking names like Chor Bazar, Mutton Street and Zaveri Bazar. At Chor Bazar you'll find a phenomenal collection of antiques, jewellery, wooden articles, leatherware and general bric-a-brac.

Crawford market, famous for flowers, fruits, meat and fish, is certainly place worth capturing on your camera. Zaveri Bazar offers excellent range of jewellery items. For colourful and innovative carpets one should head for Mereweather Road behind Taj Mahal Hotel. Here the range is extensive, exclusive and the prices slightly higher. To be on the safer side, one could, however check at the Jammu and Kashmir Emporium first. Several state emporia in the World Trade Centre, at Cuffe Parade are an ideal place to buy souvenir, a rare artifact or textiles. The Central Cottage Industries Emporium (Apollo Bunder) and Khadi Village Industries Emporium (D.N.Road) with their fixed price tags, are genuine and of superb quality.

Shoppers'Stop is located in the northern suburbs but it's the city largest department store, and no doubt the shape of things to come.

In big stores like the Shop No. 12, Indian Mercantile Mansion, Wodehouse Road - opposite Regal Cinema prices aren't to be bargained and in this store in particular I found them very low.

Prices a little bit higher but a wider choice at The Bombay Store, Sir P.M. Road, Fort

    palm leaf painting
    silk painting
    gem stone stationery
    wood desk accessories
    hand made paper
    papier-mache objects
    and much MUCH more!!

    Mumbai Tea Centre

The Tea Centre apart from being a refined place where to have a cup of tea, a snack, or a meal has also an attached shop where maybe at higher prices compared to the other ones you can find in Mumbai but I paid 55 Rs. (less than 1 euro) for a package of 100 gr. and you can choose among: Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, that's the FTGFOP Darjeeling, Assam, green teas, flavoured teas included a masala tea which I bought and have nicknamed the tea with the "tea with the smell of India", Oolong, Kashmiri and Nilgiri.

In Bombay, there is a booming business of local designers teeming with creativity. The Courtyard the best place to see high end local designer shops, whether it's jewellery, clothes or other items. It is housed in a British-era structure, converted into a luxury shopping centre, located in Colaba just south of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
