CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Elephanta Caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • A nice visit for a morning in Mumbai is a trip to the Elephanta Island (see transportation for ferry details), hinduist caves carved on rock. Entrance 10 $. Ferry 85 Rs.

At the entrance there are a lot of souvenir shops.

The Shiva Tromuri (3 faces) statue, at the bottom of the main cave, is the main attraction.

At night and saturdays is when this Mumbai beach gets full of life and animation. As it is not a place for swimming (at least I wouldn't do it!!), you can go there at sunset and enjoy the food stands, fair attractions and people walking up and down the beach for a nice evening.

Try the Bhel Puri & Kulfi at the beach restaurants.

This area of Mumbai (10 minutes north of CST Station by foot) is mostly muslim and houses a lots of streets full of baazars and very interesting shops. At the market building (see photo) you'll find a lively food and veg market, including live animals. The external decoration deserves a stop to admire it.

ART AND MUSEUMS: Prince Charles Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This nice colonial museum has some collections of Art , Archealogy , & Natural History. Was built to commemorate the visit of King George V.

I din't go in, as it was closed when I visited, but I can say it has some wonderful gardens outside and the building is really interesting too.

This residential high class area is located in the southwest part of Mumbai, at the west of the Chowpatty Beach.

Here you can find some colonial bungalows that were built at the hillside by the British and some modern apartment blocks of Mumbai's high society.

Main attractions here are the Hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Park, from where you have nice views of the city, and the Parsi Towers of Silence, where Parsis leave their dead bodies to be picked clean by vultures (but don't go there to see this, please, is closed to visitors!).

This Arch of Triumph in Bombay was erected to welcome a british queen and was the point from where the british said goodbye to their empire. From here you can take the ferries to Elephanta Island, 1 hour, 85 Rs.

At the left side, The Taj Mahal Hotel.

    MISCELLANEOUS: Elephanta caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Maybe I should have put it under off the beaten path as you need an hour boatride to reach Elephanta Caves but they are so well-known and I read so much visited that I thought it deserved a must see place...
Down the Gateway of India is the peer from where leave the ferries to the Gharapuri Island. And after the hour boatride, a walk up to the top of the stairs crowded with stalls of beautiful handcrafts and you reach the Elephanta Caves, charming spot of Hindu Gods and Goddesses stone sculptures.

The fare costs 80 Rs. the ordinary and 100 Rs. the luxury, then a fee of 5 Rs. when you enter the island.

The entrance is 250 Rs. for foreigners, 10 Rs. for Indians.

But you can get bothered with a whole page I built about these caves...

The Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari Temple (aka Hare Krishna or ISKCON Temple) is located in Juhu district. A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acharya of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) built the temple amid the palm trees of “Hare Krishna Land,” a 4 acre-plot in Juhu Beach. The temple was opened on 14 January, 1978.
The temple houses the presiding deities Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari, Sri Sri Gaura Nitai and Sri Sri Sita Rama Laxman Hanuman.
In 2004 the temple celebrates its Silver Jubilee Year.
The temple which began as a small shack in 1975 today draws many thousands of local and international visitors every week, from state ministers to street beggars. Everyday about 25,000 pilgrims throng the temple while the number swells to approx. 40,000 on weekends.
Anyone can go to experience the tranquility of the temple and gardens.
On the site, there is also a restaurant and guesthouse.
