CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Meet the Gods!!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Temple: The known history of the temple dates back to early nineteenth century. This temple has been renovated thoroughly in the late 1900s in order to accomodate the needs of the surging crowds of devotees that throng the temple during festive occasions.

The sanctum here houses a small mandapam enshrining Siddhi Vinayak. The inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold, and the wooden doors to the sanctum are carved with images of Ashta Vinayak.

Siddhi Vinayak: Most icons of Ganapati depict the elephant faced God with his trunk curled towards his left. Siddhi Vinayak in Mumbai, Siddhi Vinayak at Siddhatek in Maharashtra as well as Karpaka Vinayakar at Pillayarpatti in Tamilnadu are depicted with a trunk pointing to the right (Valampuri).

Ganapati here is depicted with four arms bearing a lotus, an axe, modakas and a garland of beads, flanked by his consorts Siddhi and Riddhi.

Festivals: Hundreds of thousands of devotees throng the temple, especially during Angaraki and Sankashti Chaturti days, when there is a continuous stream of visitors for as long as a 24 hour period.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: A Remarkable Ceiling

  • On the first floor of the Jain Temple is a special shrine dedicated to Parsvanath carved out of black marble. The ceiling shows the different planets as is embodied in Hindu mythology

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Haji Ali Shrine
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's dedicated to a Muslim saint who died on his way to Mecca and it's the Haji Ali Shrine, which there was no time to visit and which comes out in the seawater, at the end of a long pathway, in my pic during low tide.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: The Jain Members
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mumbai has one the largest Jain populations among all the cities in India. Jain members are peace-loving, they will take great pains to avoid killing even tiny insects. They also believe in self-restraint and aestheticism.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Classroom at Kanheri
  • Tip Rating:
  • One cannot help but be amazed by the labor and the dedication of the monks who carved the Kanheri temples and other structures out of solid rock -- or, for that matter, the temples and other structures at so many other places in India.

This, Kanheri Cave 90, is thought to have been a conference or class room, with sleeping cubicles around its sides.

Note how the monks would have sat, cross-legged, at the low-slung "tables" carved out of or into the rock.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Dangerous Crossing at High Tide
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Haji Ali Dargah is located on a small island off shore from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, there is only a 500 yard causeway which connects the memorial to the shore and can only be accessed at low tide. The structure is white with Mughal domes and minaret and is a famous Muslim pilgrimage site although non-Muslim visitors are welcome. As man as 40,000 pilgrims may visit the shrine on Thursdays and Fridays. During Monsoon time it is mostly closed because of the danger of crossing the causeway which has no barriers to the rough seas.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Mt. Mary's Church - Bandra
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mt. Mary's church (catholic) is located atop a hill overseeing Bandra. Every September the church is host to the feast of Mount Mary, a celebration on the first Sunday after the birthday of Mother Mary (September 8th). The feast turns into a weeklong celebration that attracts people from all across India and the world, who come to pray and request favors of the holy mother. These festivities are known as the Bandra Fair.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: The Haji Ali Dargah
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and a tomb built in 1431 which floats on the water. The tomb is of Hazrath Haji Ali said to be a Muslim Sufi saint however there are at least two stories as to who or what he was. One claims that he was a local rich Muslim merchant Muslim merchant who renounced all his wealth and material belongings prior to his pilgrimage to Mecca. He then died and his casket floated back to this spot. The other is that he was an Afghan mystic who live and meditated there and that it was his request that after his death, his casket be set afloat to travel to Pakistan but unfortunately only made it to this spot where the shrine stands today

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Ganesh festival in Mumbai
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was lucky enough to travel to Bombay( as I still ike to call it, despite Mumbai is the new name since 1994 ,outdating the old name originally given by the Portuguese some centuries ago, meaning good bay or harbour for ships), during the Ganesh festival, the famous 9 days celebration of the God Ganesh.
It is a very important venue for locals, as they believe Ganesh is the God of prosperity and good luck,
born from Shiva and killed by mistake by some of his servants, which were then forced to go out and find the head of the first living creature they could find.
Beeing this an elephant, Ganesh resulted in a human beeing with an elephant head, giving way to this old tradition.
After nine days and nights of dancing in the streets, carrying around Ganesh statues in all shapes and sizes, beating drums all the time, probably chewing betel nut to keep the good times rolling, people will throw the statues in the sea with a final giant celebration and this way leaving the God free to go back to his heaven place.
Another one of those big contraddictions of this wonderful country, how people has no food for themselves but always find the way toi bring offers to the gods, including food and money.
I met a very kind taxi driver called Moshin, you can find him at the Taj Palace gates all day, 79 y.o. and still working, extremely gentle and patient, takes you around town all day for petty money and showes you plenty of places to see and visit.
Thanks to him I saw many Ganesh statues in different parts of Bombay, off the tourist beaten track, of course.
Ganesh festival is on from 18 till 28 september this year, but every year is on a different date, so check it out before you leave.
    Namaste !

Just offshore from one of Mumbai’s busiest traffic intersections lies the Haji Ali Mosque built in the early 19th century. The mosque is accessible via a beggar-lined causeway which can be covered during some high tides. The Muslim saint Haji Ali, whose tomb is located within the mosque, was a local businessman who renounced the material world after returning from a haj - pilgrimage - to Mecca.
