CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: AFGHAN CHURCH
  • Tip Rating:
  • The high steeple of the Anglican Church of St John the Evangelist has stood over the southern end of the Colaba Causeway - surrounded by the Mumbai Naval Station - since 1847 when the church was dedicated to those soldiers who died in the Sind Campaign of 1838 and the First Afghan War of 1843. Old banners and memorial plaques line the inside of the front entrance memorializing men of the British imperial past. Pews were made so that British soldiers could bring their guns with them to church.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Entrance to the Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the entrance to the temple there are two stone elephants that flank the stairs. In the downstairs area, there are a variety of saints and deities, which also include the image of Ganesh (the Hindu elephant-headed god, the god of domestic harmony and success).

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: Colourful Frescoes
  • Tip Rating:
  • The full name of this temple is the Babu Amichand Panalal Adishwarji Jain Temple and is probably one of the most decorative and prettiest Jain temple I have seen.

There are colourful frescoes on the walls which depict a number of events in the lives of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: The Jain Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • The marble Jain Temple on Malabar Hill was built in 1904 and is a little different to others I visited on my trip. The shrine is dedicated to Adinath who was the first Tirthankara or apostle. A large number of devotees as well as curious tourists visit here every day.

Take a walk out to Haji Ali. You will find it to be a very meaningful and profound place to visit regardless of your religious orientation. If you have time and can find your way, the blue mosque you see to the right of Haji Ali in the same bay area is Haji Ani, a smaller mosque dedicated to a female saint. A very beautiful and quiet place for prayer or reflection. Keeping with this theme, you can also visit the Mahalakshmi Temple that you will see the red roof of just to the left of Haji Ali in the same bay area. You can access this temple by getting off at the Haji Ali bus stop and walking up the street, staying right. You will see a sign directing you down the small street to the temple, it will be a little walk.

  • Ganesh Mahautsav
It is a festival held every year from the last week of august to the first week of September in honor of Ganesh, the elephant headed Hindu god.
There are thousands of pandals (tents) around the city, each with a unique idol of Ganesh and decorations. people plan the decorations for their pandal six months in advance. the sheer brilliance of color and music is a must. also, the sweets shops are brimming with a variety of indian sweets. on the last day of the festival, the idols are immersed in the Arabian sea, with the promise of visiting him again next year.

The most famous of India's Dhobi Ghats is at Saat Rasta beside Mahalaxmi Station where almost two hundred dhobis (traditional laundrymen) and their families work together in this hereditary occupation.

CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS SITES: HAJI ALI mosque.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A beautiful mosque, one of it's kind, built in the middle of the Arabian sea. Visitors have to walk for about a kilometer or so on a concrete bridge built over water to reach the exquisite structure.
