Here I am, gazing from a Fattepur Sikri verandah, over the countryside, below. The lands below were vast, beautiful and green. It seemed like it was still so undeveloped and I was lost in thoughts of what it must have been like when Fattepur Sikri was full of life. Leave a Comment

LONAVALA AND KHANDALA -Situated along the Bombay-Pune highway, these hill stations are just a hop away from each other. It is very popular during the monsoons when beautiful water rivulets flow down the lush green hills. Especially so with people who love trekking, who flood the place during holidays and weekends. Leave a Comment Directions: Reaching Lonavala-Khandala-Karla : Khandala is about two hours from Mumbai by road or rail. All the trains going to Pune stop at Khandala and Lonavala.

Alibag, which is a short boat-ride away, is home to heavenly tropical beaches. Many resorts cater specifically to tourists, both international and local. There are whole range of activities at all these resorts... my favorite though is kicking back under a oversized beach umbrella and sitting there. Leave a Comment

Madh Island is also acclaimed for its beaches. There are a number of resorts here like the Retreat and the Resort. Lots of television shoots take place here so you might catch a glimpse of Bollywood. Leave a Comment

It was so unusual to see parots and budgies flying around in the wild. Pictured here is a wild budgie (I suppose), roosting on an ancient building. So cool! Leave a Comment

Without a doubt, go to Madh Island. It's off the coast of Juhu. Just take a taxi or rickshaw up to Juhu and ask them to take you to the fishing village so you can take the ferry to get to Madh Island. It's a pretty rural island. I just walked around there for two days. Along the coast, through fishing towns, through villages, it was fantastic! I spent two months in Bombay and these days were my favorite. Leave a Comment

If you have a day,do plan a visit to Elephanta Caves ,an hour away by boat from The Gateway of India. Check out the carving of Trumurti (a 3 headed Shiva) Leave a Comment

This is a small island about 1 hour from Bombay, where there are many old temples and ruins. It is worth a day trip if you are stuck in Bombay, although I was very tempted to put it in the Tourist Trap section. The boat trip out to the island is interesting, and there are some nice little markets on the island itself. The temples and ruins on the island were a bit of a disappointment, as they are in very poor condition. However, if you use your imagination (like me), you should be able to appreciate what it must have looked like hundreds of years ago. The boat trip is a real eye-opener, as this has to be one of the most disgustingly dirty harbours in the entire world. Directions: Get a boat from the Gateway to India, at the Taj Hotel. Make sure you shop around as there are some bad characters who will try to overcharge you, especially if you are not Indian looking.
