 | Mumbai Transportation | Tips 1 - 10 of 153 | | Most foreigners use taxis to move around Mumbai. They are cheap, so why not? But I wanted to taste local transport, so I decided to have a ride in one of those "british" double decker buses. The problem was that the destinations on the buses are written only in hindi, no western letters, so unless you ask and the driver is patient, you will never know where you are going... BUT I did anyway, after all I had a free afternoon and the ticket was dirty cheap. So I stepped in, not knowing where I was going, and had a ride by unknown quarters of Mumbai for about an hour or so. When the bus reached its final destination, I payed again and did the return way till I reached the original stop again! It was a nice experience, no tourists, just locals ;-)) Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

To go to Goa, I took one of these buses where you can SLEEP (in a horizontal position I mean). You don't have seats here, just couchettes, so you can lay down with a wide window (with curtains, don't worry, LOL) and sleep. The cabins are BIG, but... there is always a BUT, isn't it? they are cabins for 2 persons! When I stepped in I was alone and I thought: great, big cabins, but then 1 hour later, another passenger (yes, male, LOL) came in so I had to share my cabin with him... SO my advice is: reserve 2 seats if you go alone, is not very expensive and you will spend a much better night! Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Taking a train in India is a real experience. As a Britsish heritage, India has one of the most complete rail networks in Asia. Most foreigner travel by night in 1st class sleepers coachs. If you wanna sleep on the train and have A/C, this is the best way, and is really not expensive... But travelling in 3rd class coaches is an experience you will never forget. Choose a short trip (about 1 hour or so) and join the hundreds of indians that travel by train daily, is a great way to know the country!! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Well, not exactly about train travel but just about using the left luggage counter in the train station at Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus for anyone who wishes to keep their luggage for a day or more too!!! The rates are Rs10/- per piece of baggage for a day and the same amount extra for each day. The left luggage counter is known as the Cloak Room in this place. It is located at the corner of the Platform No 13 on the main line terminus. Foreign tourists have to show their passports for verification and the place is quite safe and secure. It is closed for a small break of half an hour each at three times during the day so be careful of the closing times and do not lose your receipt for claiming your luggage!!! You do not have to have a train ticket to leave your luggage here. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

This pic typical Bombay black&yellow taxi. Mumbai bus are good, but anyone new it took time to used to it.Delhi i nevver think of getting in local buss. But Bombay one can use bus,its crowded but bus are good maintained. To going around taxi will be best choice. There is a/c one non a/c available. A/c one they call cool cab :),the color of taxi is blue color. Its like Minimum charge Rs13,If its A/C taxi minimum charge will be Rs17. It goes with meter reading,so no cheating.Night charge will be different rate. One thing i noticed there, even taxi driver speaks English :). For sighseeing if you take taxi Its like this,6hrs Rs 800&within 80km,extra km Rs 6. May be it varies place to place,i heard its average rate.I took 2 days like this rate only. When travelling by train from Mumbai you will have to make a reservation in advance if you want to go in Sleepers 1st Class (which is the best, if not the only, way to travel around here). You give your name for that purpose and they give you a ticket with your coach number. Before going into the train you have to check that your name is in the list that they stick at the entrance of your coach. Be sure to check it first, as if it isn't, you won't be allowed to travel in that train, so U better solve the problem before the train leaves... Once you have seen your name in the list, see what is your place and go for it! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Taxi drivers and all drivers in Mumbai like their car's horn, its use must be taught at the driving school ;-)... personally I wasn't bothered at all but I heard not exactly compliments about it... Taxis in Mumbai use a taximeter - or did they do as I was guided by a Mumbai friend? - anyway if they don't, ask for it and remember to get a tariff card - I saw one in the last page of a city guide booklet - to convert the meter reading into rupees. At the airport, don't miss the counter of the prepaid taxi, the fares of which are at least the fairest. At the international terminal is just outside the building. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport has two terminals: the International one, formerly known as Sahar Airport, at about 30 km (20 miles) north of the town and the Domestic terminal, formerly known as Santa Cruz Airport, at about 26 km (17 miles) from the heart of the city. When you get out of the International terminal building, look at your right for the prepaid taxi counter, they offer the fairest prices to reach the centre. While when you take a flight, don't forget to fill in the tag which must be fasten to your hand luggage: a stamp is put on this tag when your luggage get checked and it's absolutely necessary for passing the custom. From Mumbai I travelled: To Gandhidham ~ an overnighter in 2nd class non A/C To Chennai ~ a 33 hour ride in 2nd class A/C I was initially waitlisted for the Mumbai - Chennai route (I quickly learned what RAC stood for ~ Reservation Against Cancellation), but it worked out in the end. The Mumbai - Gandhidham ride was the most enjoyable by far. Our cabinmates were some Gujarati men who shared their food, played cards with us, taught us some basic words (they didn't speak English, so this part was all done through Charades). We also had an older man who broke into Qawaali in the evening and serenaded us for the better part of an hour. It was priceless! Leave a Comment Theme: Train
