  • Bombay is well served by B.E.S.T buses which run to every nook and corner of Bombay. They are comparitively slower due to the heavy traffic but they are very economical compared to the outrageous costs of autos and taxis. The website below would tell you which bus to take from Place A to Place B.

  • I have found a site where you can work out your bus route on the internet, you give the bus stop of departure and where you want to go to and its works out your bus route for you, gives the bus number and each stop it stops at and also when to change busses, even gives the bus number, I have worked out my points of interest and noted the details for my trip .

  • The BEST bus is the 'best' way around bombay . Although sometimes confusing as to where they are headed , the best buses provide cheap travel all over mumbai !!

    If the lonely planet guide does not give you this, I will attempt to bring in here the list of local bus routes operated by the BEST that gets you from one end of the city to another through it's myraid of inner roads and gullies and gives you a sneak view of what this city is all about.
    The red color of these buses, a gift to India from the British, used to be in one other shape than the ones currently seen - the trailer bus type that I used to ride way back in the early 90s. They were phased out in the mid 90s as they were behemoths on the small roads.
    But this is just the beginning. I will update here, the routes and how the tickets are charged.
    For starters - my fav routes that I regularly travel on are - 312, 39, 533 Ltd, 424, 425 [to work] and otherwise - 241, 33, 79, 38, 4 Ltd
    most of these except the 424, 425, and 533 run from the most popular central suburb - Dadar up north to Andheri and beyond to either the northern suburb of Goraygaon or further north west to Maalwani.

    The BEST bus (comonly called the BST busses) are a very convienient way to travell around Mumbai especially when the train stations are far away or when the local trains do not take you to the place you want to visit. During Peak hours it is best to get busses from the starting stops so that you do not have to stand the entire journey. Now a days the destination journey are written on the front and side of the Bus along with the route number. Generally the front is in Hindi and the information on the side is in English. So it is easy for both the locals as well as the tourists. There are three types of Busses :-
    1) Ordinary Bus.
    2) Limited Bus.
    3) AC Bus.
    The Ordinary Bus takes longer time to reach destination as it stops at most locations. The Limited Bus stops at only important locations. The only disadvantage of travelling through Bus is you get tired very soon and that is thanks to the polution and crowd during peak hours. A solution for this is the AC bus. The bus is a very economical way of transportation. The minimum fare is Rs. 3.50 for ordinary bus, Rs. 5.00 for limited bus and Rs. 22.00 for AC bus. For more and detailed information about fares and routes you can visit the online website, it is very helpful and gives all information on which bus to catch if you are in one location and want to reach another (and the information is along with the fares).
