(Local Transport) Train & BEST Bus in Mumbai

    by bag-bug Written Jun 28, 2013

Whenever you are in Mumbai, always travel by Local Train or BEST Bus. It is very cheap for long distance. If your stay in Mumbai is 8-10 days. it is advisable to take bus pass & Train ticket.
both are different altogether (unlike in other countries). For bus pass, go to any Bus terminus. (there is one out side Museum, Colaba) take your ID card for 25 Rs. & pay 40 Rs. bus fare for unlimited travel per day. Train tickets at station ticket window, avoid peak hours 8-11 a.m.(south bound) 5-9 p.m.(north bound). Train pass is not worth if you are not travelling much on local trains.Trains has two terminus Churchgate (western) & CST (central).

Mumbai's buses transport millions of people. The bus system, known as BEST, is run by a government organization, Brihanmumbai (formerly Bombay) Electric Supply and Transport. BEST is the largest organized bus transport network among the major Indian cities.

The BEST fleet consists of red colored single and double decker buses. Although traffic to/from the suburbs can make for a long ride, the buses are a great way to get around the actual city. There are frequent buses and fares are very cheap (usually just a few rupees). I would avoid taking the buses during rush hour(s) because they are usually extremely crowded (standing room only!). I would take the bus at least once though - it's a fun way to meet the locals.

Check the BEST website which now lets you check specific bus routes and fares easily.

Significantly contributing to the industrial development of India , this city has it's 'Arteries' in the form of Central and Western Railways. Not less importantly than that, BEST's Bus Service running across the vast area of Brihan Mumbai limits, can be very well called the blood vessels of this metropolis.
They Are All Over the Mumbai.
Bus Rush Timing :morning 8 Am to 10.30AM to Evening 5.30 to 8.30 pm
    Avoid this Timing .

The BEST (Bombay Electric Supply & Transport) buses run all over the city and are numerous. There are the single buses and the red double decker variety. Bus routes are written in Hindi on the front and side of the bus however English is often given on signs at bus stops. I read warnings to be careful of pickpockets on these buses. BEST buses are the largest municipalized transport in India.

There are now new city buses which are air-conditioned and the doors are controlled by the driver.

  • B.E.S.T Busses are truly one of the Best

The BEST bus (comonly called the BST busses) are a very convienient way to travell around Mumbai especially when the train stations are far away or when the local trains do not take you to the place you want to visit. During Peak hours it is best to get busses from the starting stops so that you do not have to stand the entire journey. Now a days the destination journey are written on the front and side of the Bus along with the route number. Generally the front is in Hindi and the information on the side is in English. So it is easy for both the locals as well as the tourists. There are three types of Busses :-
    1) Ordinary Bus.
    2) Limited Bus.
    3) AC Bus.
The Ordinary Bus takes longer time to reach destination as it stops at most locations. The Limited Bus stops at only important locations. The only disadvantage of travelling through Bus is you get tired very soon and that is thanks to the polution and crowd during peak hours. A solution for this is the AC bus. The bus is a very economical way of transportation. The minimum fare is Rs. 3.50 for ordinary bus, Rs. 5.00 for limited bus and Rs. 22.00 for AC bus. For more and detailed information about fares and routes you can visit the online website, it is very helpful and gives all information on which bus to catch if you are in one location and want to reach another (and the information is along with the fares).
