"THE RICKSHAW": Auto Rickshaw
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you happen to stay in the Suburbs of Bombay (Bandra and Northwards), The best way to get around town is by a three wheeled bombay rickshaw. These are not the one's pulled by human power, but by motor power, similar to the tuktuk's in Thailand. Only they are not as noisy and much smaller (carrying a max. of 3 passengers). The driver is seated upfront and the rickshaw's have a triangular shape when viewed from above. They have no doors and are hence breasy and comfortable. This is by far the most exciting mode of transportation in Bombay. The Auto rickshaw has found fans in some the world's greatest citizen's. Media Magnate Rupert Murdoch (Sky, Fox, Star) bought one and had it shipped to HK for his wife, Bryan Adams was so found of travelling in his rickshaw he asked to have the ban on rickshaw's in South Bombay (from Mahim till Colaba) lifted so that he would not have to travel by a "boring" Four Wheeler Limo.

"THE RICKSHAW": "Let's take a Rick!"
  • Tip Rating:
  • In suburban areas of Bombay you can take a rickshaw to get around (local speak: rickshah). These are the little black and yellow 3-wheel motor-scooter devils that have a driver in the front and room for up to 3 passengers in the back. Ash grew up with these things, so it was nothing to him. For me however, it was a completely different experience. There is only one way to describe it: SCARY! The driving is seemingly erratic; there are no apparent rules or regulations (but thats with most vehicles in bombay); traffic-lights, lanes, or signals are ignored; and no 3 seconds go by without the driver honking the horn. If you've driven ANY vehicle in the past, this is an absolute nightmare - you sit in the back of the rick, and your right foot continuously pushes an invisible break pedal to the floor. If you have a heart-condition, I'd recommend taking some sort of sedative before getting into one of these things. After a couple of days (and numerous grey hairs later), I sort of got comfortable with the ride and let go of the notion of having any control. I guess you just rely on the driver and trust that they know what they are doing. Look at it kind of like a speed ride in Disneyland - it's scary, but you should be safe for most of it. Well, like I said ... for most of it!! On the last day of our visit we actually got into a rickshaw accident - a motorcycle hit us. It wasn't really the rickshaw driver's fault, but what we learned is that though ricks don't go very fast, they have a tendency to topple over when its breaks are jammed hard ... we got away with a few scratches and bruises and more info for another VT-tip ... :-D During any of the many rickshaw strikes, roads are virtually barren since ricks seem to be major road hoggers. Another thing you might notice are the social messages at the back of every auto ..'Woman empowerment', etc. Rickshaws are cheaper than taxis, starting at 9 Rupees (~20 cents).

    "THE RICKSHAW": Bicycle Rickshaws
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bicycle Rickshaws have been popular from the early part of last century but are not so common in the city areas these days having been taken over by the auto rickshaw. You will however see not the variety that transports passengers but these varieties which really just gets the owner around. The pedal is operated higher up by hand.

    "THE RICKSHAW": The Auto Rickshaw
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Auto Rickshaws (elsewhere known as Tuk Tuks or Bajaj’s) are the main form of transport in the suburbs. These are the little three-wheeled vehicles which will comfortably take 2-3 passengers but can often seen to be cramming in a lot more. A lot of the Auto Rickshaws use CNG and like the taxi’s, they have a meter. While a little hair-raising at times, they are a cheap mode of transport to get around in but not if you have a bad back or the like, their suspensions are dreadful.

    "THE RICKSHAW": Mumbai is India’s...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mumbai is India’s international gateway. It has also the busiest domestic air network in the country. The international terminal is at Sahar, which is 30 km north of the city center. The domestic terminal at Santa Cruz is just 4 km away. The offices of most of the international and domestic airlines are situated around Nariman Point. Prepaid taxis are available from the airports to the downtown. Mumbai is a prominent railway hub of the country. It is the headquarters to two railway zones, Central and Western. The main railway station is Victoria Terminal, now renamed Chattrapati Shivaji Terminal. Other railway stations are Dadar, Churchgate, and Kurla. Express and super-fast trains are available for most of the Indian cities from Mumbai For travel within suburbs- use the famous 3-wheeler vehicle called RICKSHAW(check picture). It's fairly cheap and they are available everywhere- no need to make phone calls. A whistle would work just fine!(check picture) Tips for hiring Auto-rickshaws Auto-rickshaws are allowed only in North Mumbai. No auto is allowed beyond Sion in Central side and Mahim on the Western line. Autos are not advisable for pregnant women, since auto drivers are notorious for rash driving. Always pay in accordance with the fare chart. For more info visit: http://www.aboutmumbai.com/Transport.asp

    "THE RICKSHAW": An exhilarating ride!
I absolutely loved taking rickshaw rides, they are so cheap and fast and the fact that they don't have any doors makes getting in and out of it a lot quicker. Mind that you don't fall out though, if you're not very fast on your feet, elderly or young, ensure that the driver stops at a safe place to allow you to get down safely. Mumbai traffic can be very hellraising at times, they literally drive with the horn, so will be very noisy. Keep all limbs well inside the vehichle at all times and hold on to your valuables ( easy for someone to sneak up on a motorbike and grab your camera). Then sit back and enjoy the ride, you get to have a good sightsee from all angles. We had many 15min rides to the town centre that didnt cost us more than 20 rupees a go!

    "THE RICKSHAW": Auto Rickshaw ride
The Auto rickshaw can me menacing to outsiders. On our very first day, we took a ride in it. It was quite an adventure. Forget about the confusing meters. The ride itself will exhilirate you. It was so fun that we took a longer ride a few days later. Zig-zagging across the often confusing roads of Mumbai, the skillful Auto drivers traverses with such skills. A must for all Mumbai visitors.
