Poona is a hop away from Bombay by plane. From the coast, up the slope to the top of the plateau where Poona is located.
The airport is nothing more than a big bus stop.

I am not very sure if there are cabs that will directly pick you up from Mumbai International airport and drop you at Pune. Just take a pre paid cab from Mumbai International airport to Dadar (east). Get down at Pune Taxi stand and take a Pune bound taxi from there.
Last time, in the yesr 2006, I needed a taxi to go to Nashik from Mumbai International airport. I had the phone number of the Mumbai Nashik Taxi operators union (their office is at Dadar too). From Mumbai airport, I called up the union office and they sent me a Nashik bound Taxi to Mumbai International airport. They said they will charge Rs 200 extra for this service. But at the airport, this taxi was not allowed to come near the arrival lounge Tarmac. So I had to carry my luggage on the trolley to the place where the taxi was waiting for me, which is bit of a hassle. It took 20 mts to find this cab.
Hence I would suggest you take a pre paid cab to Dadar and hire the Pune bound taxi from there

Autorickshaw is convenient way of going around Pune. Just like taxi fare is metered. But there are routes where you shared the transpo and you just pay a fix charge. Be careful also cause sometimes the driver will charge you much if he knew your a tourist.

I find the bus very very laidback. It is very very old bus and of course very slow. But it is a nice experience because I feel like I live in those old days.

We stayed in a 5 star hotel for my business trip. There I did a taxi for going to my office they charged me 500Rs/- for a 5 mins ride. Whereas if u do a taxi from a taxi company directly you will get a taxi for 8 hrs 80 km for 800 s /-. Ater that they charge approx 50 rs/- per hr plus extra mileage if u have gone over.
Bes will be to call one from yellow pages or Pune guide booklet available in most 5 star hotels. Well known company name is called Prassanna.
