Autorickshaw is convenient way of going around Pune. Just like taxi fare is metered. But there are routes where you shared the transpo and you just pay a fix charge. Be careful also cause sometimes the driver will charge you much if he knew your a tourist.

I find the bus very very laidback. It is very very old bus and of course very slow. But it is a nice experience because I feel like I live in those old days.

The best way to travel today between pune and mumbai is by bus. the roads are good, with an amazing view of the lonavala valley on the way. it also helps in interaction with the locals in the bus, which by my experience is the best way to see a new country and interact. one of the famous transport company like the grey hound in the US is called raj-travels and the bus service is called raj national express, all the buses are the latest volvo so the best comfort possible. they have buses to and from all the major cities in india.

one another company is Neeta travels. they are majorly into buses in the western zone of india.

These the tickets in these buses are around 5-7 us$ for a one way trip. you will have to book it in advance. they have buses throughout the day. it is by far the safest way to travel between these cities

when travelling within pune, beware of the rickshaw drivers. these are few people whom outsiders must be aware of. even being an indian from bombay i have got cheated many times.
    these people overcharge tourists.

please remind them that you will note the rickshaw number, it will usually start with MH-12

they will say all sort of crappy things to take more money from you. avoid taking on. especially while coming by train. i have myself gone upto the transport commitioner of police. so feel free to scare them itself.

An excellent way to reach Goa from Poona is taking this sleepers' bus, where you can spend sleeping most of the 12 hours it takes to get there. 400 Rs.

There is a large network of trains in India, but generally the problem is getting a ticket. It's best to go straight to the train station, and from there try and find the correct counter. If you carry a foreign passport, generally there will be a separate counter marked for 'Foreigners'.
The train companies do reserve a few tickets for tourists, so if you're desperate for a ticket, ask about these. They will ask you to produce your passport.
Buses, scooters, bicycles, rickshaws, taxi's etc are all available for transport within or between towns. Be sure to agree a price before you agree to take the trip.

    LOCAL BUSES
A real indian experience, this old local buses make trips of 2-5 hours and they are always full, as they don't leave at a certain hour, but whenever the bus gets full!!
If you carry a big rucksack, try to get there soon in order to take one of the front seats, as there is the only place where you can leave the luggage.

To/from Poona, try the train. I took the 'Shatabdi' train, I believe the name was, in a wagon with A/C which will serve you tea and snack like in an airplane.
The ride is interesting since you have to climb up a pass from Poona, and then down a steep slope down to the coast where Mumbai is located. I was told the train has 2 locomotives in case one breaks down.
After a while, being in the air conditioning wagon gets tiresome. I spent a long portion of the 4 hours trip on the platform between two wagon enjoying the scenary: the jungle, some monkeys peaking at the passing train, the train stations, the villages, etc...

Poona is a hop away from Bombay by plane. From the coast, up the slope to the top of the plateau where Poona is located.
The airport is nothing more than a big bus stop.
