autorickshaw around the city
Autorickshaw is convenient way of going around Pune. Just like taxi fare is metered. But there are routes where you shared the transpo and you just pay a fix charge. Be careful also cause sometimes the driver will charge you much if he knew your a tourist.

The best way to travel today between pune and mumbai is by bus. the roads are good, with an amazing view of the lonavala valley on the way. it also helps in interaction with the locals in the bus, which by my experience is the best way to see a new country and interact. one of the famous transport company like the grey hound in the US is called raj-travels and the bus service is called raj national express, all the buses are the latest volvo so the best comfort possible. they have buses to and from all the major cities in india.
one another company is Neeta travels. they are majorly into buses in the western zone of india.
These the tickets in these buses are around 5-7 us$ for a one way trip. you will have to book it in advance. they have buses throughout the day. it is by far the safest way to travel between these cities

when travelling within pune, beware of the rickshaw drivers. these are few people whom outsiders must be aware of. even being an indian from bombay i have got cheated many times.
these people overcharge tourists.
please remind them that you will note the rickshaw number, it will usually start with MH-12
they will say all sort of crappy things to take more money from you. avoid taking on. especially while coming by train. i have myself gone upto the transport commitioner of police. so feel free to scare them itself.

There is a large network of...
There is a large network of trains in India, but generally the problem is getting a ticket. It's best to go straight to the train station, and from there try and find the correct counter. If you carry a foreign passport, generally there will be a separate counter marked for 'Foreigners'.
The train companies do reserve a few tickets for tourists, so if you're desperate for a ticket, ask about these. They will ask you to produce your passport.
Buses, scooters, bicycles, rickshaws, taxi's etc are all available for transport within or between towns. Be sure to agree a price before you agree to take the trip.

LAXMI QUEEN BUS
An excellent way to reach Goa from Poona is taking this sleepers' bus, where you can spend sleeping most of the 12 hours it takes to get there. 400 Rs.

LOCAL BUSESA real indian...
A real indian experience, this old local buses make trips of 2-5 hours and they are always full, as they don't leave at a certain hour, but whenever the bus gets full!!
If you carry a big rucksack, try to get there soon in order to take one of the front seats, as there is the only place where you can leave the luggage.
To/from Poona, try the train....
To/from Poona, try the train. I took the 'Shatabdi' train, I believe the name was, in a wagon with A/C which will serve you tea and snack like in an airplane.
The ride is interesting since you have to climb up a pass from Poona, and then down a steep slope down to the coast where Mumbai is located. I was told the train has 2 locomotives in case one breaks down.
After a while, being in the air conditioning wagon gets tiresome. I spent a long portion of the 4 hours trip on the platform between two wagon enjoying the scenary: the jungle, some monkeys peaking at the passing train, the train stations, the villages, etc...

Taxi fares in 5 star hotels ridiculous
We stayed in a 5 star hotel for my business trip. There I did a taxi for going to my office they charged me 500Rs/- for a 5 mins ride. Whereas if u do a taxi from a taxi company directly you will get a taxi for 8 hrs 80 km for 800 s /-. Ater that they charge approx 50 rs/- per hr plus extra mileage if u have gone over.
Bes will be to call one from yellow pages or Pune guide booklet available in most 5 star hotels. Well known company name is called Prassanna.

Taxi from Mumbai International airport to Pune
I am not very sure if there are cabs that will directly pick you up from Mumbai International airport and drop you at Pune. Just take a pre paid cab from Mumbai International airport to Dadar (east). Get down at Pune Taxi stand and take a Pune bound taxi from there.
Last time, in the yesr 2006, I needed a taxi to go to Nashik from Mumbai International airport. I had the phone number of the Mumbai Nashik Taxi operators union (their office is at Dadar too). From Mumbai airport, I called up the union office and they sent me a Nashik bound Taxi to Mumbai International airport. They said they will charge Rs 200 extra for this service. But at the airport, this taxi was not allowed to come near the arrival lounge Tarmac. So I had to carry my luggage on the trolley to the place where the taxi was waiting for me, which is bit of a hassle. It took 20 mts to find this cab.
Hence I would suggest you take a pre paid cab to Dadar and hire the Pune bound taxi from there

This is a classic example of developing India. This will take you from Mumbai to Pune and vice-versa in just 2.5 hrs as 6 hrs taken to reach by National highway. This is a great, smooth road on the soil of "Incredible India".
Raj National Express
Raj national express has daily bus services to Pune. It is an air conditioned, luxurious and comfortable bus with nearly 100% safety record as we know that Indians are not rash drivers like Thais or Italiand.
The Lohegaon airport in Pune is fairly small, but has been recently turned into an international airport. There is therefore some amount of upgrading and expansion work happening, which should make it a better place to fly into or out of eventually...

the best... rickshaws
Being an amalgam of the rich and the poor; the rural and the urban; the plains and the mountains; the rivers and seas; India has different modes of transport. While in cities, the mode of transport is basically automated such as cars, scooters, buses, auto rickshaws; in the rural areas people still commute by bullock carts, horse carts and cycles. In the seas, and the rivers that are in plenty in India, the major forms of transportation are boats and ships. In the desert states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, nothing can beat the ship of the desert, the camel. There is a well-developed network of trains, trams and aircrafts that facilitate inter state and international journeys
