  • when you are planning to go between pune and mumbai, and when you go to the pune station area. please donot get carried away by the touts who will help you get into cheaper travel.
these are mostly some private cars which run between the 2 cities and offer a ride at a cheaper fare.

in most cases the cars and drivers r good, but sometimes i have heard that the driver is drunk or a cheat and they are robbers. they steal whatever you have and keep you stranded on the highway.

being a local itself i avoid taking this cheaper transport. its better to reach your destination safely than save money.

  • If you are new to Pune and without a local escort just remember that Rickshaws are better public and most used public transport here. These ricks work on meter basis .Dont hire any rick from other than que if you are new in Pune. Just before getting a rick just ask any other shop keeper average fare for that area. Most of rackdrivers are good people but if you find yourself doubtfull dont get in much argument ,send a wriitten complaint to local 'Road Transport Officer' by registered post
Avoid office timings to move on roads if possible to avoid traffic polution

Food is great, but you have to verify where it's been and how it was cooked. People do what they can in the cities, and if they can, they will have live stocks (cows of course, but also pigs).
Here is a bunch of pigs gazing in a garbage dump... Well! Hope that is not the norm.

    Monkey thefts from locked rooms

  • Friends of mine have had valuables stolen from locked rooms in Pune. One possible explanation is that there are trained monkeys who enter rooms with open windows, even if they are protected with bars. This sounds a bit fantastic, but may well be true. So if you leave valuables in your room, even if it is locked, either make sure the windows are closed, or else leave your stuff in locked suitcases.

    Over Charged Rickshaws

  • The ricks do over charge some times and esp. if they know you are not from around here . So be carefull , a quick conversion is to multiply the fare by 7 , ie if it is 2 Rupees 30 Paisa x 7 = ~ 15 Rs fare (30c) . If you cant do that ask for a card by saying " card dikhao " and check the corresp. fare for 2 30 .
They might also charge you extra for baggage but that should not be given !! as it is included in the fare .

  • Well.. to all you travellers from outside India, ONE important thing to keep in mind.. PLEASE WATCH OUT WHERE YOU EAT!! Indians use lots of spices, and I would advise u against all eating places on road sides. Obviously you'd carry your water bottles!LOL
