I always book my train journeys way ahead of time, three months in fact. I always use www.cleartrip.com where you are able to select class, pay then print your ticket. My first trip to India was spent in endless queues in booking offices which I hated, that and most of the tickets for the train travel class I wanted had sold out months ago.
I will be off again soon and will be travelling from Bombay to Jaipur, thence to Chandigarh. I love the over night train journeys, they count as a hotel and as such I half the price in my mind!
Whilst in Bombay I will take a minor detor to see the caves at Ajanta (Jalgaon) I have already been to Ellora ( Aurangabad) twice and loved it there. There is a possibility that some time in the future the Ajanta caves will be closed to tourists, I want to get there before that happens.
Get back to me if you want anything else answered...
KK Travels near the airport offer a small minibus as well as a car if you wish to travel on your own. If you can contact them before you land here then it will be best to have a confirmation beforehand. The other option is the taxi from Dadar Station which is not so comfortable as it is a non airconditioned taxi and you have to share it with three other people. The fare is much less than the private operators or bookings done through travel agents. The train is the best option and cheapest too but then you have to go at the right time and book your tickets before you arrive here so that you have a confirmed e-ticket. You can travel by airconditioned chair car as well as sleeper coaches or even normal general class compartments on some of the trains that go to Nashik or beyond which is also not expensive at all.
