Matriarchal society

An interesting fact about Shillong (or the entire Meghalaya state) is that here you find a matriarchal society. The female member is the head of the family. It is the women who bring home their husbands after marriage. The children adopt the surname of their mothers and not their fathers. The womenfolk are more active and do more of the outside work.

All the women keep their lips red, this way.

The people of Meghalaya, especially womenfolk are very fond of chewing Paan or Beetle leaf with nuts always. Perhaps the only time they do not chew Paan is while sleeping. An outsider may think why all of them are chewing gum and their lips and tongues are red, but it with beetle juice. The rural women prefer to keep their lips red, this way!

A word of caution for the tourists: Please dont' try this as the people of Meghalaya, chew Paan with raw beetle nuts, which is intoxicating. If you have to try, please ask for dry nuts to be put in.

The village Haat ( Market ) is run by Women folk.

The idea of putting this tip here is to let people know that women power is really prevalent in the state of Meghalaya. Though in almost all tribal area women do a lot of work, but in Meghalaya they also hold the decision making power apart from doing all sorts of work, either be a labour, running shop, hotel, cooking, collecting fire wood or anything that requires manpower, they are there.

I shall be writing more on the subject in my other tips.

Meghalaya is the only state in India, where Women Power is really visible. Although, women ( Mostly from Low income group) do almost all the work but in the State of Meghalaya the women heads the society. You shall find women handling almost all the work/job, right from being a petrol pump vendor, vegetable seller, fish vendor to almost everything.

In this category I shall try to put more pictures of women who handle all sorts of work in the state of Meghalaya. I found women in almost in all the shops right from grocery to wine shops.

The better sex never had it so good as in Meghalaya. At least among the Khasis tribe, children take the family name of the mother. The property is inherited by the youngest daughter and basically women are the head of the family.

I grew up in Shillong and eventhough am not a Khasi, greatly admire this culture. I believe women should be given equal, if not greater, rights than men.

Meghalaya is a lovely place, dubbed as scotland of the east by the Britishers who used to live there before the independance of India. I do not know about actual Scotland, but this is a wonderful place with waterfalls and lakes and dense jungles.

Meghalaya means "Abode of the clouds" and experiences the highest rainfall in the world. The town of Cherapunji located some 50 Km south of the capital city Shillong has the highest recorded rainfall. Currently this record is held by Mausamram, a village about 5 km west of Cherapunji.

If you are a foreigner, you'll love this place. The locals like foreigners in their midst and welcome them to visit their homes too if you know someone.

The women of Meghalaya are very beautiful. I should know, I grew up with them and fell in love with several of them during by school & college years there.
