Amritsar takes a little getting to. The express train from Delhi takes about 6 hours, the regular train about 9. With our travelling companions (elderly mother-in-law and 4 month old daughter) we decided flying was best for us.
From Delhi flights are available on Air India/Indian Airlines, Kingfisher, and Jet Airways. The airport in Amritsar (Rajsansi Airport) is an international airport (much of it still under construction) and many of the flights continue on out of the country after stopping in Amritsar. It is important to know what your flight does because you will need to use the international airport in Delhi (instead of the domestic) and allow extra check-in time as well.
Once you arrive in Amritsar, you will find plenty of taxis or auto-rickshaws available for the 10km (15-20 minutes) ride.

The Raja Sansi Airport in Amritsar serves several major Indian cities and also internationally to Singapore and Tashkent(Uzbekistan). Although the airport is only 11km from the city centre, do allow yourself at least 20mins to get there during non peak hours. We didn't and regretted it. We missed our flight to Delhi by 5mins and weren't allowed to board. All other flights were full and trust me it wasn't the nicest feeling on earth especially when we had another flight to catch in Delhi at night. We got a great deal on Air Deccan a week before but ended up paying someone Rs8000 which was more than the total cost of our budget flight to drive us all the way to Delhi bearing in mind that he will be driving back with an empty load. It was probably one of the worst experiences in my life - 9hours non-stop on the road cramped in a car which it should have only been over an hour in the air. And it wasn't even my fault! The girls were the ones that were taking their own sweet time. When we arrived, the guy wanted more money although he had agreed on the amount before we left Amritsar. He didn't get any of course - we were all pissed off with a foul mood. LOL!

I took a Swarna Shatabdi Train from New Delhi to Amritsar.
Scheduled Depature: 7.20am
Arrival: 1.05pm
Fare: 595 Rupees for A/C Chair
This train departed and arrived exactly on time.
Golden Temple ML from Amritsar to New Delhi.
Scheduled Departure: 9.30pm
Arrival: 7.25am
Fare: 988 Rupees for A/C Second Class
This train departed and arrived exactly on time. I have to admit I was very worried about being on this train because it was an overnight one and I've heard not-so-good stories about it before. My friend and I got 1 and 3 berth. There was an Indian version of the Brady brunch who got 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Even though they were annoying to death, I was glad that they were around me. I actually felt safe somehow because of them. Everything went well and I would take this train again anytime!

Non A/C bus without fans is the bus that we paid for, 600 Rupees from Delhi's Red Fort to Amritsar in 10 hours sharp. To buy tickets of any kind of transportation is a challenge in this country. It's easy to pay money to a travel agent to get the ticket but it was a problem to get what they had promised, such as this one.

Non A/C bus to Amritsar has nothing much to share actually but some passengers might want to experience it. I uploaded this photo here for those who need it when going to Amritsar. 600 Rupees is the cost of this bus from Delhi.

This is a photo I took from the bus that send me from Amritsar city to the border of Atari to cross over to the Islamic Pakistan. The bus is driving okay but the temperature is crazy at 41 C and when I sit inside the bus, the temperature goes higher especially when full of passengers, but it was fun, enjoy. The cost of the bus is less than 40Rupees, about an hour to the border.
