Travelling from Delhi to Punjab.
The best way is by the daily Shatabdi Express, which is the fastest and most comfortable way of getting from Delhi to Ludhiana/ Jalandhar/Amritsar.
you can book online at
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/
It runs twice a day at 7:20 am and 16:35 pm. Total journey time : 5 hours.
Departure station: New Delhi (code: NDLS)
Arrival Jalandhar City (JUC)
Fare is from Rs 485 to Ludhiana (approx)for First Class AC Chair and Rs 980 (approx) for Executive Class, which has wide, extremely comfortable 2 each side seating. These may have gone up slightly.
Both fares include meals and drinks and tea/coffee/, all very decent and served to your seat. There are place style pull out tables for eating.

Be careful when using the trains. Whilst they are cheap the buying of tickets can be a bit of a nightmare. Try to book in advance if you can but if not prepare for a long process at the station in Jalandhar which is always busy. The station is busy with street kids offering a shoe shine and many beggars. They do not present a particular problem but beware of pickpockets at busy times. The best travel is via AC/Chair which is exactly what it says. An air conditioned carriage with comfortable chair. Refreshments are served free at regular intervals but the trains are slow. The toilets can be dirty but both Western and Asian types are provided for choice. Taxi drivers can be intrusive in Delhi or Jalandhar and can offer you bus trips when the trains are full. Be careful though as sometimes these trips can be expensive and the buses sometimes don't leave until the following day. Be prepared to barter. If you are a white European locals will assume that you have money to burn. Stand your ground and pay for what you think the journey is worth. Even then locals will still make a handsome profit. When taking a taxi always negotiate your price before setting off. They are cheap but you are still open to be exploited if you're not careful.
