    Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj
A few of the original eight imposing towers still stand erect within the ramparts of the Lohargarh fort. Two of them - Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj are of special interest. These were built by Maharaja Suraj Mal to commemorate his victories over the Mughals and British. The coronation ceremony of the Jat rulers of Bharatpur were held at the Jawahar Burj.

    PARK INFORMATION

by BerniShand Updated Nov 22, 2003

The park is open from 6am to 6pm and entrance costs 200 rupees.
There is no charge for still cameras but a video camera ticket is 200 rupees
the cycle rickshaws cost 50 rupees per hour, and if your driver gives you good information a tip will be expected.
when the water levels permit it is possible to be taken around by boat, but I am not sure about the cost, have a vague memory of it being about 150 rupees [ per hour presumably ]
    cycles are avilable to hire

dont forget water, and a packed lunch if you are planning a full days stay

    Birds - Birds - Birds

by nepalgoods Updated Aug 23, 2003

Veteran ornithologist H. G. Alexander spent a full day at the park compiling a list of over a hundred species of bird at Bharatpur. This is an indication of the enjoyment that the sanctuary can provide. Some 377 species have been spotted at Bharatpur Sanctuary, making it one of the most inviting destinations in the world for ornithologists, amateurs and nature lovers. Various species of indigenous water birds, waterside birds, migratory water birds, land migratory birds, and domestic land species are found here. There are approximately 56 different families of birds, of which the Passeriformes (156 species) and Charadriformes (56 species) dominate. One-third of birds at Bharatpur are migrants, many of whom spend their winters before returning to their breeding grounds in the Arctic and Central Asia.

OK, I took the above from a book about the park. Most birds, that I saw, were vultures and some waterbirds.

    Keoladeo Ghana National Park

The park holds not only Indian birds, but also resident and migratory European, Siberian, Chinese and Tibetan ones. The rare Siberian Crane is apparently eagerly awaited by bird watchers each year.

For those of us who are less enthusiastic about birds, the park still has appeal. I was surprised at how contagious the enthusiasm of the park guide was. Spotting brightly-coloured kingfishers became cause for elation. . .

The park is also home to deer, antelope and enormous pythons.

During British rule in India, this park was known as the best shooting resort in India. In 1938, the Viceroy's party shot over four thousand birds in a single day. Thankfully, naturalists stepped in and in 1956 it was designated an official reserve, then later named the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. It only measures 29 square kilometers, but over a given year it hosts up to 375 species of birds (none of which proved to make good photographs).
