Jaipur was a favourite spot with the important personalities of the British Raj and the Maharajas always arranged for their guests of honour elephant rides up to the Amber palace. Even today, the elephant take tourists up to the Amber Palace. The mahout (Driver) would sit astride the elephant's neck, and direct the animal with his feet, and with a hafted hook and spike called an ankush. In addition to the mahout, a number of crew would sit astride the animal in a Howdah - a wooden framed seat, on elephant back like shuttle taxis.

It's a kind of entertainment to take a elephant ride to Amber fort. The back of elephant is flat and the walk of elephant is stable, so the ride is very comfortable. By the way as the ride is high, we have a complete panorama of a nearby town. a lack and hill.
On the way to the amber fort, foreign tourists would be taken pictures by some photographers. When tourists are going to leave the amber fort, they would show you some new-developed pictures. You could just take the picture (s) which you take interest. One picture costs only 1 USD.
It could be considered a transportation tip, but is also a pretty nice and different activity (at least for me as european guy).
Considered that, is also a bad thing to see, as once yuo drop on this poor animal, you will detect by yourself how the owner is treating the poor Elephant...so, is up to you to decide to drop or not to drop...no one comment more....
elephants in all shapes and sizes, tourists with cameras clicking non stop, music and dance, elephant rides thru the city as the procession got underway.... It happened to coincide with the festival of `holi' this year...
