The Umaid Bhavan Palace is a neat stop if you have a few days in Jodhpur, but the best part of the visit has to be the patio leading out of its restaurant, The Pillars.
There is a cover charge to have a drink, but we ended up staying and ordering food to celebrate my friend's birthday. Once the bill came, the cover charge had disappeared.
The food was excellent; after three weeks in India, I had "western" food for the first time ~ a delicious pasta dish. More importantly though, the service was excellent and we never felt rushed. The view from the patio is gorgeous and there are peacocks wandering the lawn. We stayed and watched the sun set over the desert and truly felt like we were in the lap of luxury, for a fraction of what a similar evening would cost at home.
Oh, we also saw Salman Rushie at dinner ~ there with his bride-to-be, who looked young enough to be his daughter!

As I was staying here (here being the Haveli Guest House) I decided to eat here on my first night in Jodhpur and wasn't disappointed. The restaurant is strickly vegetarian with Indian and Chinese dishes. I had a veggie curry, rice, chipatis, papads and a bottle of Kingfisher beer for Rs200. The restaurant is located on the rooftop where the views of the fort (which is illuminated at night) and the rest of the city are worth the price of the food! Service is great as your food is served by 2 guys on turbans who have a chat with you.

This place is in the Sardar Market near the Clock Tower. I came here twice for some lunch snacks and enjoy the market atmosphere. The first time, I had a slice of chocolate cake (as they sell bakery products as well as juices and lassi's). The second time I had a veggie omlette and a couple of slices of bread and a banana lassi which was good all for just Rs45!

More than a century old, Mishrilal is a legend in these parts. A trip to Jodhpur, without paying your homage to this temple of sweet delights, is a crime. In terms of ambience, it's ramshackle and non-descript. Large photos of great Indians adorn the green walls of this establishment. Mishrilal is not a place where you go to savour `atmosphere'. It caters to the uncomplicated routine of sheer tasting.
Favorite Dish: Malai lassi and a half-glass of rabri are must-haves at Mishrilal. The servings are so thick that you require a spoon to partake of the lassi. If you want to neutralise the sinful amount of calories, you may opt for their piping hot samosas.
I'd go so far as to endorse Mishrilal's lassi as the best I've had. At INR15 per serving of lassi, it's a riot!

It's a roadside hole-in-the-wall outfit, next to Clock Tower. Before hitting this joint, I had no idea that an attempt could be made to uplift the innocent omelette to such exalted status!
The writings on the accompanying snap shall provide some idea of where I'm coming from.........
Favorite Dish: If you prefer to be less adventurous, stick to the good old 'masala omelette'.

Be sure to try their outdoor buffet. Quite excellent and reasonably priced. It is a very special place to eat and it's worth of it's price (600 p/p), including good service and dance and music show. It opens 19 o'clock and sometimes reservation should be necessary. The food "On the Rocks" restaurant is absolutely another quality, and the serving ( for example, you get everything what you ordered, in on time)!
Favorite Dish: The best tomato soep and naan.

On Nai Sadak, you can't miss Janta Sweets. The invariable crowd that jostles for their quota of the goodies at Janta Sweets shall automatically lead you there.
There's hardly any room to stand here, let alone sit. Once you manage to catch the attention of one of the harried employees across the counter, signal for some `pyaj kachori' (a deep fried kachori with a base of fried onion and spicy potato) @ INR7 each and `mirchi pakora' (again, a deep fried giant green chilly, coated with lots of mashed spiced potato) @ INR6 each. Utilise the sweet dip that comes free with the fries.
For good measure, you may round off your experience with some `khaman dhokla', after which the thick `badam milk shake' should help you douse the flaming effects of the chilly pakora.
Favorite Dish: Chilly pakora, and the badam shake, of course!
