IMPOSING STRUCTURE FROM BRITISH RAJ 1888

Visit the old Viceroy's lodge that was built in 1888 and now home of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (since 1965). It is about a 30 minute walk from the centre and you will see it on the right as there is a big garden on a hill. You can visit this building from 9 am to 8.30 pm, but it will close at 1 pm for an hours lunch break.

TOWN HALL IN THE UPPER MALL

Visit the main street and see the English architecture at the town hall which is still in use today, but was built under the British rule. At one time the British forbade the locals from walking in this area.

Up at the Jakkhu temple, Ram Dave, the pujari (prayer conductor), studies monkey social behaviour. He has found a way to control them through eye contact. This can be witnessed every Sunday in the compound in front of the Hanuman temple.

Visit the Viceroys Lodge

Patterned after an English great house, complete with its own small parish church, the old Viceroys Lodge is stepped in character and well worth a visit.

This was the builiding the likes of Curzon used when retreating from the heat of Delhi in the summer months.

I only visited the gardens and viewed the builiding from the outside because of time constrains (I turned up at 17:00 when it shuts) but was impressed by the building that would not have been out of place in Oxford or Cambridge.

Tours are available for less than $10.

The Town of Shimla

There is an entire road of shopping dedicated exclusively to all sorts of wooden craftsmanship items. You can purchase anything from elephant or camel figuriens to rolling pins or other decorative items. The prices are very reasonable. Its a good place to buy some wooden gifts for friends back home.

Shimla at Sunset

An evening with a beautiful sunsent must be taken in while visiting Shimla. The sun glistens off the mountain peaks and the if you're lucky they sky could be filled with magnificent hues of reds and oranges. We were only in Shimla one night, bue were fortunate enough to take in the beautiful scenic view. The scenery is the main attraction of this part of India.
