There are just so many beautiful things to buy in Rajasthan. Amongst the many:
Leather Goods (Bags and Shoes)
Block Print fabrics in amazing colours and patterns
Bed-Covers & Cushion covers
Wall Hangings
Jewellry (Especially handcrafted silver)
Miniature Paintings
Ready made clothing (tops and trousers) with beautiful embroidery
Hand made paper
My favourite thing to stock up on is the silver jewellry. It is a fraction of the price, and wonderful quality of silver. The designs are unusual, bold and colourful. I now have quite a collection)
What to pay: Offer half the asking price- then bargain hard. A beautiful silver ring would cost about R400.

The Bazaars spill with products and there is a magnificent glow of colours all over. Intricate work carved on handicrafts or the wonders of gems and stones, it has it all and even more like the colours dancing on the textiles and fabrics with silver or gold threads settings and complimented with the variety of designed by the age old families of skilled artisans.
What to buy: Silk-threads, Beads, Gota, Zari, Zardosi, Banarasi, etc.
What to pay: Just compare it to prices in your country. If it's significantly cheaper, then it's a good buy.

With a profusion of kingdoms, art and craft prospered in Rajasthan under royal patronage. The alliance with the Mughals brought even more variety to an already rich repetoire and the artists were kept busy decorating the palaces of the kings and the nobles. With independance, the kingdoms were abolished and the artists could have sufferred but tourism came to the rescue. Today, every city in Rajasthan has galleries specialising in all kinds of arts and crafts. The state government has emporia under the name of Rajasthali where prices are fixed and reasonable but the shops are not particularly good either in selection or service. I would much rather go to private shops where they have a wide selection of stuff and are more than eager to show you all the wares (in the hope that you will buy something). Of the cities that I visited, Jodhpur seemed to be the most organised in this area. There are private galleries selling all kinds of stuff on every street.
What to buy: The Indian ecomony is booming and the urban middle class has more cash than ever to spend. One area where they are splurging is interior decoration. Old Rajasthani homes are being torn down and every concievable piece is being recycled by these galleries. I went to stores selling everything from old doors, beams, pillars to door knobs, latches, newspapers and even matchboxes. Just everything except the bricks and mortar of the house were available for sale. But thats not for everyone. Here is a list of things that I bought. Loads more is available but that is all upto personal choice.
a. Reproductions of rajasthani jewellery on marble plates
b. Mughal paintings on old paper
c. Set of Rajasthani musicians (I bought the standard design but new stylised stuff is also available)
d. Mina work on silver stools.
What to pay: Its all upto you. One recommendation will be to go round the town looking at stuff in all the galleries and making a mental note of the stuff available. After you have done that, decide on a particular store where you have seen most stuff to your liking and the staff are helpful. Now descend on that store and spend considerable time shortlisting and buying everything from there. That way you will be able to get a good discount for your purchases. Buying in bulk also gets you good packing from the store and makes shipping easy.

At least once during your trip to India, I guarantee that you will find yourself in a factory outlet. Maybe it's by choice. Maybe not.
If they're selling high-ticket items, they'll offer you a drink. Don't ask for tea or coffee. Ask for bottled water. For sure, they'll give you a 1 liter unopened bottle of water. That way, even if you don't buy anything, you walk away with a free bottle of water.
With any luck, you may amass enough so you won't need to buy bottled water for the rest of your trip.
What to buy: Rugs look like a good buy--if there's space in your luggage. I wouldn't trust any offers of shipping.
Moreover, buy only what they make in the factory; they'll offer it to you at near cost price. For example, if it's a rug factory and you see one that you like, it will be probably be reasonably priced. Anything else on display--clothes, bags, beddings--may have been sourced from another manufacturer, and you''ll have to pay for the cost price plus the commission of the "factory" who's selling it to you.
What to pay: I don't know if you have the patience or time to canvass for good prices. Just compare it to prices in your country. If it's significantly cheaper, then it's a good buy. Maybe not the best buy, but a good buy.
