The quickest way to get to Sikkim would be to take a connecting flight to Bagdogra a Town near Darjeeling and Japlaiguri district. Since this is an important airport (Domestic) for the eastern part of India. I recommend that the tickets especially for the months inbetween the months of March to June and September to November confirmed before.
Or else there are Trains that you can catch from almost all the metropolitian cities of India to get to the New Jalpaiguri Railway station. There are various trains that bring you to this station as one can get different classes of coaches. (Cheap and expensive, Quick and Slow)
whether you take the train or the plane it is easy to get a Jeep and also buses from the terminals that take you to Sikkim after five hours on the jeep and a little more on the bus. You will be able to see wonderful Scenary as you drive right upto to the capital of Sikkim, Gantok.

Most transport is organised through local agents or contacts you may have.
To get to Gangtok, you fly to Calcutta and catch a flight to Bagdogra. This is the nearest airport from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.
From Bagdogra, it is a beautiful refreshing 6hr journey by road to Gangtok. Since we had a work contact they sent a jeep to pick us up from Bagdogra airport. I suggest making plans ahead of arriving there, since the ones at the airport are usually expensive.
We found it relatively cheap to travel within Gangtok, the capital. But once you got out to the beautiful valleys and mountain roads, the prices also took on a ascent :)
On average a guage is about US$30 for a 6-7hr ride out country.
Within the city, you're just paying a couple of bucks (US$) to get you to say a place 5ks out of town. This is per person. Usually works out best if you're in a group of 2-3 pple.

If you have access to your own vehicle, you will truly have an amazing time exploring the sights of Sikkim. This was the bridge enroute to Kalimpong. While we noticed white sands below, the area below didn’t look like it was used much by the locals.
