Favorite thing: Chennai Beach (or Marina Beach) is one of India's longest, running along 13km the city's coastline. It's a decent route to walk from the War Memorial to the San Thome church (very nice!). Move a couple of blocks inland from there and you'll find yourself at the Kapaleeswarar Temple, which I highly recommend visiting.
The beach is often crowded and very littered though. . .

Favorite thing: This temple is a fantastic example of Dravidian architecture ~ this is what comes to mind whenever I picture southern Hindu temples. The brightly painted plaster sculptures are breathtaking. . .and the layout inside the temple grounds is like a small town itself.
The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is even more incredible. . .but my photos from Chennai turned out much better.

Favorite thing: Yah! I would like to suggest U the restaurant
Vikram......a few steps from the Chennai Central!
I didn't miss out the lunch and dinner....as long I was there.
Also visit Marina beach, the second longest in the world, running for 12km from Chennai harbour in the north to Santhome (St. Thomas) church in the south, joining the Elliot quieter beach extending upto Adyar's residential colony.
If U like hill stations....then Ooty is a must... Ooty/Udagamandalam (hill station) -- 105 km from Coimbatore.
It is the capital of the Nilgiri district and is known as the 'Queen Of Hill Stations'. The highest peak - Doddabetta.
Attractions - Doddabetta, Ooty Lake, Deer Park, Rose garden, St. Stephens Church and Botanical Gardens. Best time to visit.....Feb to Mar and Sep to Oct.
Fondest memory: I really like the culture and tradition of South India....and just to roam around the places lazily to observe the local people and their daily life.
Though I hardly got a chance to visit any of the famous places there...I would refer U to visit Golden Beach!
We took a car and moved all the way from Triplicane to the Golden Beach. Going to new places and trying to learn a new language is really very exciting.
U can take an auto or a cab and move around the city...and I can assure.......that U will enjoy the journey!!!

Favorite thing: ...be ready for maddening traffic & it's related congestion!! I was not ready for this, despite having lived here for 4 years as a kid. The rains helped quite a bit. .....but then another problem the puddles & mud.
Fondest memory: Mind you....Madras is a city alive in extremes. A short distance (2/3 hours) away from some very cool places like Mahabalipuram.

Favorite thing: visit the kabaleeshwar temple in the heart of the city. The temple is open for worship from 4 am to noon and from 4.00 to 8.00 pm. For hand held cameras visitors are expected to pay Rs 5 and Rs 101 for video and movie cameras that draw on the temple's electricity supply. temples are the arteries of this ancient city steeped in tradition. there are enough temples in chennai itself to fascinate one and all...
Fondest memory: 1. Besant nagar beach. safe till 2 in the night. absolutely essential in the summer as the cool breeze wafts in from the water.
2. Specer Plaza. for cheap and comfortable shopping (its air conditioned)
3. kabaleeshwar, nanganallur, ashtalakshmi, adayar guruvaayoorappan and the 100 other temples. for the calm and soothing atmosphere and sense of faith.
4. fighting (in some cases literally) with the autodrivers.
5. Cinema theatres. the chennaites love their movies. some of the theatre complexes rival the ones abroad. check out an english movie in Shree or Studio 5, the best theatres in chennai.

Fondest memory: Madras has some of the finest examples of 17th century architecture in India. The oldest Protestant church & the oldest surviving British construction in India, St.Mary's Church; the red Indo- Saracenic High Court building constructed in 1792, the world's second largest judicial building. And the Fort St.George which now houses the Secretariat and Legislature.

PHOTO : OUTSKIRT OF MADRAS CITY.
This is a normal scenery, at the the outskirt of almost any Indian's cities. People at here are consider lucky, having their own houses instead sleeping at the train station. Some of the houses here, build up by wet mud and some by cow's dung.
