    Kapaliswara Temple
    by tayloretc, 2 more photos
A visit to the Kapaliswara Temple is a must if you’re in Chennai - it’s easily the largest and most dramatic of its kind in the city. But take some time to walk around the area too, especially in the evening. Surrounding the temple and tank is a huge and vibrant evening market, with pooja items, bangles, cheap toys, fresh fruits and vegetables, shoes, wallet-sized pictures of gods and goddesses, and anything else someone has to sell. The streets and alleys near the temple are full of restaurants and bakeries and stores selling quality textiles and art, books from Indian publishers on all subjects, and traditional instruments. Some of them you’d never find except by accident or by going with a local.

A note on entering the temple. Near the two main entrances there are places to leave your shoes, which give out tokens. Do not leave your shoes outside the gate. I had my old, smelly sandals stolen, on a Sunday no less. Also, note that there are “temple guides” who aren’t, and you can’t take pictures inside. Non-Hindus aren’t allowed into the sanctum sanctorum. And walk around the temple buildings clockwise from where you enter.

Mahabalipuram is one of history's intriguing enigmas. The ancient Mamallapuram, as Mahabalipuram was formerly known, was flourishing port town of the Pallava rulers of south India who chiseled in stone a fabulous "open-air museum" of sculpture under the vault of a burning sky.
Experts say that there were seven pagodas or temples on the shores of Mahabalipuram. All but one were pillaged by the rapacious sea, though there is little underwater evidence to substantiate their existence.
Most of the temples and rock carvings of this place were built during the reigns of Narsinha Varman I (AD 630-668) and Narsinha Varman II (AD 700-728). Though the initial kings of Pallava dynasty were followers of Jainism, the conversion of Mahendra Varman (AD 600-630) to Shaivism led most of the monuments to be related with Shiva or Vishnu

Adjoining the Bay of Bengal, Chennai has one of the loveliest beaches. The 4.5 km long Marina beach is the second longest beach in the world. This is a nice place to have a stroll in the evening or in the morning and you can also be a part of the tamil cuture as you see the life go along the pavements. The green lawns on one side and the beach on the other gives a nice feeling....
