High Court by PierreZA One of my favourite areas in Chennai. It feels as if you are in a different town when walking around here. You will see many cycle-rickshaws (some partly motorized), and plenty of shopping opportunities. It is best maybe just to walk and get lost a bit. There are plenty of smaller Temples in the area. I also came across an Armenian Church, which was being renovated at the time. The High Court is a complex of buildings worth visiting, a beautiful red colour and also beautiful architecture.

This large park is a welcome respite from the traffic and dust of the city. It’s shady, with playgrounds and picnic areas. There’s also a kind of zoo, or at least there are animals in enclosures. There are snack stalls outside, and it looks like you bring your own lunch in. Entrance fee is Rs5 for adults, additional for cameras or video cameras. Directions: Near Guindy National Park

Chennai film studios ("Kollywood") rival Bollywood for output, so you'd think there would be a lot of studios around. Actually, there are only two, and one, AVM Film Studio, is the only one that’s still open to the public. It appears they've shut down movie production, and now do TV only. It’s all very casual – “open to the public” means you more or less wander in and wander around, though run down back lot sets, construction projects, and whatever filming is going on that day. Lonely Planet says you need a pass, but no one gave me one. I wasn’t even aware I was inside the studio grounds until I ran into a film crew. There’s at least one inside studio, which you can enter during breaks in the filming to watch for a while. No one seems to mind photography, but it’s probably best to ask. There’s no entrance fee to any of it, and someone even offered me tea. There was filming both inside and outside on the Saturday morning I went. There were foreigners doing something in the outside shoot (looking like they’d just wandered in), so if you’ve ever wanted to be an extra in a Tamil commercial or TV serial, here’s your chance. Address: 38 Arcot Road, VadapalaniDirections: About 10 km west of the city center.

Contemporary theater isn’t supported much, so it’s almost all either traditional (focused during the Dec/Jan festival season), or amateur. There are some professional theater troupes around, although I know at least one of them doesn’t actually get paid for their work. The couple of amateur performances I’ve seen have been very good. You can sign up for alerts at the website below. Also, check the bulletin boards at bookstores. You may have to do some research into the venue location - they can be out of the way, and the average auto or taxi driver probably won’t know where they are.

by undisputed A befitting memorial for the poet-sage Thiruvalluvar, a replica of the famed temple chariot of 'Thiruvaroor', was built in 1976. The life size statue of the sage sits in the 33m chariot with 1330 couplets of Thirukkural inscribed on the panels. Leave a Comment Address: Valluvar kottam

by undisputed Built in 1504 and rebuilt in 1608 and 1893, the cathedral is said to house the remains of Apostle St. Thomas. The basilica has an enormous stained glass window and a beautiful one-meter statue of Virgin Mary that was brought from Portugal in 1543. Leave a Comment Address: Santhome

by johnbradshawlayfield Fort St. George - Fort St. George occupies a place of pride and prominence in Chennai. The British East India Company under the direct supervision of Francis Day and Andrew Cogon built it in 1640 AD. This bastion achieved name from St. George, the patron saint of England. The fort houses St. Mary's Church and fort museum. St. Mary's Church the oldest Anglican Church in India built in 1680 and the tombstones in its courtyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. This ancient prayer house solemnized the marriages of Robert Clive and Governor Elinu-Yale, who later founded the Yale University in the States. The Fort Museum is the repository of rare exhibits of weapons, uniforms, coins, costumes, medals and some other artifacts dating back to the British period. The flagstaff at Fort St. George is still the tallest in India. South of the Fort is the War Memorial, a graceful monument built in 1939 in memory of the warriors who sacrificed their lives during the First World War. The Island Grounds, the biggest lung space in the city is situated on an island formed by the river Cooum. This ground is the eventful venue of Trade and the Tourist Fairs held periodically which are seasonal attractions. The High Court with the decorative domes and corridors reminiscent of Indo/Saracenic architecture and the adjacent Parry's corner are the important landmarks of Chennai. This area is always crowded and active. Built in 1892, the High Court of Chennai is believed to be the second largest judicial complex in the world.

Bazaar! by PierreZA This is a very busy and colourful area. It is very lively, but also crowded, but worth taking a trip there. There are many shops, but also a street market with many different items to buy. It seems that is mostly locals doing shopping here.

A great American style restaurant to visit is Sparky's Diner in Chetpet. There is a good range of Italian, American, Mexican and Cajun food there. My favorites were the Chicken Marsala and also the Lasgana. Meals can be topped off with a good brownie/ice cream sundae. Interesting decorations are all around the restaurant, good music. An American guy, Thom Petty, runs the place and the food is excellent. Definitely worth a visit! Address: 15 East Spur Tank Road, Chetpet Chennai (Madras)Directions: Near Fishermens fare restaurant, across the street from World University Services.

Kapeleeshwarar Temple by PierreZA This amazing temple is situated in Mylapore. Do make some effort and visit – it is worth it. You can enter the temple area (remember to leave your shoes outside). For a small amount, you are aloud to take pictures inside. It seems that there is uncertainty as the date when this temple was built. The area around the temple is also very interesting, do walk around. Address: Mylapore, Chennai
