    Elliots Beach

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Located in Besant Nagar, Chennai, Elliot's beach is the preferred destination for those with a clean atmosphere in mind. Following the road along the coast down south from Marina one will come to Elliot's beach where one can spend a few hours relaxing.

Elliots beach was earlier the city's bathing beach, now it is frequented by people interested only in a stroll during the evenings and mornings. A stone memorial of Danish sailor, Karl Schmidt is also present in the beach. About 1 km to the north of the Elliot's is the place where the Adayar river meets the sea.

Best of all the public beaches in Chennai

by udtaparindaa Written Mar 26, 2014

Also known as the Besant Nagar beach, I find it to be the best of the all public beaches in Chennai. Not only the locality around is great but also it offers lots of good eateries (both local and global brands) lining the beach. One can also try hell lot of variety of street food including Vegetable 'Bhajjis', Fish Fry, Mango Chaat, Pani Puri, Ice Creams etc.

I love visiting this place during the evenings right before sunset and sit there till it gets all dark. One can see lots of small crabs moving all around and much more where the crowd is less. During nights some people even try catching them. This beach does offer some of the most spectacular sunsets I have seen in India and on beaches specifically.

The waves are way too strong (which usually is the case for Bay of Bengal) and one should take extreme care while entering the waters too deep. Every year there are cases of drowning here. The beach also has a Karl Schmidt's Memorial, named after a Dutch sailor who lost his life while successfully trying to save a girl from drowning in 1930.
