You can fly into Chennai, but I came on train from Mumbai. Actually, I came on one of the slowest trains known to man ~ the mail train. It took 33 hours to cover what appears to be 800 km. If you do arrive by train, you'll arrive at either Chennai Central or Egmore Station. . .where you'll instantly be surrounded by taxi touts. I was caught off-guard and paid about three times what my ride to the hotel should have cost me. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

by virattravels Very well connected. Trains, Aeroplanes and buses would take you to Chennai depending upon where you are coming from. Auto-rickshaws are plentiful. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

by chanakya Traffic Traffic in the city has, of late, turned unruly. So, if you are motoring down the streets, don't be surprised if pedestrians dart across without warning or motorists overtake from the wrong side. Public Transport ( buses ) If you are looking at economical public transport, the In-city Bus service and the suburban Trains will prove ideal. But here again, this is only as long as you avoid the morning and evening rush hours. Autorickshaws Be warned - autorickshaw drivers here will demand more than the metered rate without batting an eyelid. At all times enter the autorickshaw only after you and the driver are in agreement as to what the fare should be (metered rate, a fixed sum or metered rate plus a few rupees extra). As much as possible, it is always better to hail a moving and vacant autorickshaw, than to try and pick one from a stand. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

flight the city has both, a national and an international airport. railways chennai is an important hub in rail transport in india. there are trains from bombay and delhi to chennai. take the AC coaches whereever possible. Avoid autos. call taxis are cheap and reasonable. best way is to hire a car for the day. they will cost, at most 30-40$, with a chauffer. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by AliJoe Photo : INDIAN TRAIN. The Photo Show Part Of Transportation In India. Using a student card, I received nearly 75 % train fare from Madras Terminal to New Delhi. What I can recall, I'm paying US $8.00 for ride two days and one night in the train. Remember, the train name *Golden Arrow*, may be no more inservice now. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Driving in & around Chennai is chaotic. Everyone drives like mad guys with little respect for traffic order. Cars honking everywhere. It's better to sit down, relax and let the locals to drive you around. Beware of motorcyles & autos. And oh yeah, nobody wears helmet and nobody wears seat belts here. Most people drive with the windows open to get 'fresh' air from outside. Also, just close your eyes if you can't take it when the car overtakes and runs over kerbs or road dividers. It's perfectly normal. Theme: Car/Motor Home

If one is daring enough, the best way to get around the city is to perhaps rent a scooter or a motorcycle. If going to be in the city for a long period of time, one can even consider buying a second hand scooter. Best to rent an automatic (without gear and clutch) kind of scooter. Be equipped with a road map and helmet. Theme: Motorcycle

* These are fun to ride in (a.k.a terrifying) and even more fun to see how many people you can fit into one. The price should be around 40-50 rupees (as of summer 2006), but at night the price will go up understandably. As a foreigner you'll get charged more. Don't try to pit rickshaw drivers against each other in a bidding war, it won't work, they stick together. Theme: Other
