What to buy: Madurai is best-known for its handloom sarees of excellent quality, brassware, wood carvings. Hajeemoosa is well know store house of fabric & sarees. Handicrafts can be bought from - Madurai Gallery, Imran Handicrafts Arts, Cottage Industries Exposition Ltd., Cottage Arts Emporium.

The Tailor's Market section of Pudhu Mandapam is a long row of fabric shops and sewing machines. If you have a favourite piece of clothing, bring it along and they can copy it for you. Otherwise, they can turn around orders for blouses, shirts, skirts and pants overnight.
What to pay: Very inexpensive.

The quality or the clothing made here was excellent ~ I loved the gold-threaded band around the bottom of the skirt and pants I had done. If you like a bit of room in the waist though, be sure to let them know. They will tailor to *fit*. . .which didn't leave much extra space.

What to buy: Madurai is renowned for handloom textiles - mosly sari. There are plenty of private shops and cooperative society owned shops offering variety of handlooms.

Near the eastern gate of Meenakshi temple is street full of textile shops. Handlooms, tailors, churdars etc etc.
Here you can purchase fabric and have them stiched custom made.
