Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: sandals, long skirts for women, loose fitting light cotton clothing for men and women, a hat
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: you might want to check into bringing malaria medication. I didn't take any and I was fine...it probably depends on what time of the year you go and to what part of Tamil Nadu.
bring insect repellent. Deet and Cutter both work well
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: If you're going to an Indian beach, bring covering clothes (ie. no swimsuits...go in the water in your skirt/pants and long shirt)
If you're going to a western style beach you can wear a swimsuit
Miscellaneous: bring small gifts for children. If you go to a village or pass children on the road, its always nice to have something small for them:
Bring pens (EVERYONE asks for pens), candies, chocolates if they don't melt, crayons, ball hats, etc.
