Rituals for the dead
Many HIndus come to Rameshwaram and the surrounding areas like Dhanushkoti and Thiruppulani to perform rituals for the dead ones in the family. It is considered to be a very special place, since Lord Shri Rama offered such rituals here. There are many priests who perform the rituals and who can be contacted in one of the Mutts around the temple such as the Kanchi Shankar Mutt, the Shringeri Mutt, Kashi Mutt etc.
The priests who perform the rituals would also guide you inside the temple and also if you so require arrange for your food in home caterer's house.

General India TIp
This is for all of india (or from what i've seen of the country). in india haggling like a lot of the world is the norm. most indians know how much it cost for you to arrive in the country and find it pathetic the way we haggle. the price they give you is the same price they give middle class indians, and yes they will go down, but don't insult them. at the same time don't allow yourself to be ripped off. unless you are in a place that is frequented by foreigners for a couple of weeks at a time then the chances are you will not be given a silly top price.
a rickshaw driver may go down, but a little.
Taking the Plunge
There is a main temple dominating the centre of town. I didn't take a photo, don't know why it just didn't feel right. Here's a shot just in front, then off to a bit of the temple.
