Marble inlay tables and end-tables on display by pchamlis, 3 more photos After you've visited Agra Fort, maybe the Baby Taj and (of course), the Taj Mahal, you'll understand one thing. Agra = Marble work. There are a plethora of fine shops in the Agra area offering incredibly beautiful marble items, featuring the same precious and semi-precious stone inlay work for which the Taj Mahal is so famous. We visited a shop called Kalakriti, and it was a classy and reputable place. One of the problems visitors sometimes face when buying higher-end art and crafts in India is to find a shop that is dependable in both their pricing policies and delivery options. Kafakriti, recommended to us by our trusted and terrific guide Rajiv, is such a store. If you are looking for any marble work, be it a large table top, maybe an end table, or even just small jewelry boxes - all with the impressive local marble and inlay craft in evidence - this is a good place. WE loved the table tops, but were a bit intimidated by the prospect of shipping something home that weighs hundreds of pounds. In the end, we did purchase a lovely little marble jewelry box, inlaid with peacock designs featuring a deep green, blue, gold and red stone(s) patterns. Very nice. We also took a chance to examine their fine selection of quality jewelry. If you'd like to shop for fine gold and silver rings, necklaces, earrings.... then, you'll have a lot to choose from. In my opinion, the prices were reasonable as well. I'm sure you could find something cheaper somewhere in Agra, but... you wouldn't necessarily have the confidence in dealing with or perhaps having something shipped home with "lesser shop". As with most of these craft shops, there are areas in which you can observe and appreciate the artisans crafting the treasures being sold. I have to tell you, after seeing the work necessary to inlay marble.... I would have charge 20 times what the store was charging. Kalakriti is a unit of the Oswal Traders and Travels group.
marble treasures, inlay work. Lots of jewelry options, as well as an extensive carpet selection. I found a better selection and price on carpets in Jaipur, later in our trip. (just for your information) IMHO, THE thing to look at in the Agra area is marble.
Depends on what you buy. Table tops are generally $800-1200 US or so. Smaller ones are less. There are small marble items for less. The little box that we bought was something like $80 US or so. Just a little something for our mantel back home. by zumodemango Well, it's not really a shop, this man goes with his perfums and he sells them in teh street or restaurants. We were having luch in a terraza roof and he came to show his perfums and bath products. I chosed some for presents without knowing the flower(that he cultivatives in his garden), finally i bought: lotus, poppy, magnolia and almond. Finally, he asked (like many people in Agra) to write something inhis notebook for the next time we go or for posterity!
it was about 100 RS for the bottle and he gave one of roses like a present. Leave a Comment Theme: Bath and Beauty

Street vendors near the entrance gate were really persistent! Beat them by asking for a huge discount! Check also if they are really selling authentic marbles 'coz they used to show authentic one but they are actually giving the fake one once you buy it!
(date bought the items - Jan. 25, 2004) 1. figurines (7 pcs) - Rs 90 2. elephant ornament (1 pc) - Rs 6 Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: near Entrance Gate, Taj Mahal

Perfume seller by diageva You will find street sellers like this perfume seller. At his case he hade all kind of natural perfumes he did in his own garden (or that was he told us). As this man, many will come to you to sell you their products. You have many markets at Agra, I don’t mean souvenirs shops, but really markets, that are very interesting to see. I saw specially two of them: one at the entrance of Little Taj Mahal and the other at the entrance of the mosque. They are really markets of other time. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by keeweechic Other than the Government Emporiums there are other places to check out such as the Sadar Bazaar, Raja-ki-Mandi, Kinari Bazaar and Munro Road. There is also the Shilpagram crafts village who sell marble items direct by the artists. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Agra

Prepping the Carpet for Sale by Canadienne Our tour of the carpet factory (name forgotten) began with a look at the artists who copied and painted traditional patterns. The next steo in the process was weaving, then cutting and finally the washing of the rug. I was surprised at the force that went into the washing ~ four men repeatedly running their boards over the weave. It was intensive labour. . .but the finished products were exquisite.
