Incredible Transportation at Incredible Taj Mahal

  • Hey when going to see Taj Mahal don't expect your vehicle (polluting) to drop you near this magnificent monument. The polluting vehicles are stopped at least 500 Meters away from Taj. So utilize these 500 meters to reach Taj by hiring an Elephant (Yes, Incredible India-isn't it). The elephant will drop you at the Taj and bring you back from Taj to your parked vehicle. You could also hire a Camel Cart, or Horse Card (known at Tonga in India). These are some unconventional modes of transport which will take you back to the ancient or medieval India.

  • Once in Agra, easiest way to visit Taj Mahal and other popular spots are by hiring own car or auto rickshaw.

You can find drivers on the street. Negotiate the fare.

  • Hi,

Yes, winter (Oct - Feb) is the perfect time to visit North India.... it is too long to drive from Udaipur to Agra (not advisable)... the best way is to take a flight from Udaipur to Delhi (1 hour) and then drive onto Agra (5 hours)... an economic option is to take an overnight train from Udaipur to Delhi (MEWAR EXPRESS 18:35 - 06:10) and then onto Agra by road or by train.... anyways how many days you are planninng a holiday for... hope my suggestions could help planning a better trip...

    Thx

  • Fastest way is by private car. Get a good driver and car from a secure rental agency (enquire from hotel/airport). Local drivers can be reckless. So always ask and choose carefully.

Trafiic on roads can be chaotic, so leave early from New Delhi so that you don't get caught.

Eat and use the loo before you leave as toilet conditions can be challenging.

  • National highway #2 connects Delhi with Agra (via Mathura). Its about 200 kms away and takes three hours (or more if you stop for a meal on the way)
Several tour operators will offer coach services to Agra, the ones from Delhi will usually leave early morning.
The other option is to rent a car to take you to Agra and back, which helps if you want to be mobile while in Agra.

  • November is great for a trip to India. The weather is not hot , nor cold.I was there at that time in 2008. We found that taking a taxi from one place to another was good. I'm not sure if there is a train service to nearby towns, but if so, it's OK. We travelled by train from Delhi to Agra, a three hour journey.. Then by hotel's taxi from Agra to Jaipur, and again from Jaipur back to Delhi. As the drivers in the area are like madmen, a respectable driver will be safer than taking a bus .

  • Straightforward

200 km, a little over 2 hours, trains virtually every hour

TRAIN is far the best option

  • Agra is an important railway hub and very well-connected to other parts of India. Traveling by train is far the best option both to/from Agra.
Do not let the travel agents in Delhi talk you into visiting Agra by hired car&driver. It is not worth it. Price is usually 3-5000.- Rs for the day and from Delhi it takes at least 6 hours to reach Agra on road. Moreover, the road is not a scenic road but rather the Indian version of a highway. Buses are a little cheaper than trains but the 6-7 hours spent in a crowded Indian bus doesn't make up for the little amount you can spare.
Air travel is out of question. It is too expensive for the covered distance and not at all time-efficient if you take into consideration all the hassle that comes with it (airport transfer, check-in, security checks).
So trains are the most cost- and time efficient way of coming and leaving. Take the early morning Shatabdi from New Delhi Railway Station (only 2 hours, around 350.- Rs/person) or the morning Taj Express from New Delhi Nizamuddhin Railway Station (2,5 hours, around 250.- Rs/person) if you don't want to get up too early.
Leaving Agra, regular and relatively quick (at least quicker than road travel) trains connect Agra with Jaipur in Rajasthan, Gwalior and Jhansi to the south (Madhya Pradesh) or back to New Delhi.
So by all means, use the train service.

  • Agra is well connected from major cities of India. There is a daily commuter train available from Delhi as well. Famous Palace on Wheel also makes a stop here.
