For a more aunthentic ride into the Taj Mahal complex, take a donkey or camel ride. Negotiate for the price first before jumping in. Choose from the ones where the animals are healthy and well-treated.

Fastest way is by private car. Get a good driver and car from a secure rental agency (enquire from hotel/airport). Local drivers can be reckless. So always ask and choose carefully.
Trafiic on roads can be chaotic, so leave early from New Delhi so that you don't get caught.
Eat and use the loo before you leave as toilet conditions can be challenging.

Outside the hotel gates were the usual tourist hawkers, including the cycle rickshaw men. At the time we were there, which was in 1988 so the price will undoubtedly have gone up since, you could hire a rickshaw for the whole day for less than one dollar.

Delh i and Agra are well connected with local buses and trains.
The distance beetween those two cities is only 200Km, so the journey will be a vewry nice short and pleasant one, but..to be pleasant, all depends on which kind of transportaiton you did decide to take...avoid the train, you will spend more time in the trainstation then on a train! The easiest way is to take a bus or at least a privat car and in a couple of hours you will be here!

Agra isn’t a very big city, but as well, isn’t so small to travel torugh it always walking.
The best way to visit the main sites (Mausoleum + Agra Fort) is with a rickshaw.
If you overnight in the Taj Mgnaj block, the Taj Mahal is 500/300 meters far, so a simply walk.
For any other reason, simply wait for a rickshaw wallet!
This is the easiest way to visit the city.

If you want to take buses from Agra to other towns or cities, please do not go to travel agencies for tickets of so called ' Luxury Buses ', just go to the central bus station will do or take train. The Luxury Bus I took cost me 130Rs but when they saw me, they marked up the price to 150Rs. Another two foreign tourists same bus with me came out some good idea, they paid double the price trying to get better bus. The travel agent sold them the ticket promised them better Luxury Bus, but in the end they were in the same bus with me and complaints all the way. This Luxury Bus carried not less than 70 passengers together with tons of goods on top with 4 passenger up there and many stood congestedly in the middle walkway.
So don't waste your money to buy better bus tickets, they can promise anything you want but you get the same old thing.
* The other point of view can be, if you want to experience sitting on rooftop of the bus for 7 hours, this Luxury Bus might suit you. Picture is our Agra-Jaipur Luxury Bus, enjoy your trip.

I came here by public bus from New Delhi's bus station. The bus operate every 30 minutes 110Rs ticket 5 hours. This is one of the best way to get to Agra from ND. This type of bus let you travel with local peoples and you don't have to wake up as early as 5am, anytime take an autorickshaw to Agra Bus Station in ND and wait few minutes there for the bus to go. This bus will send you to the last stop in Agra's bus station nearby the railway station but don't get off there, try to get off once you see the Taj Mahal from far and take a local autorickshaw to the West Entrance where many cheap low budget guesthouses located, room cost 200Rs there with many shops and restaurants. Other options are taxi, cost 3000Rs return. Fastest train Bhopal Shatabdi Express cost around 500Rs one way departs daily at 6am arrive 7.55am. 2nd class train cost around 70Rs one way. A/C Tourist bus cost 600Rs one way, tickets can be purchased at travel agencies in New Delhi. Domestic flight is another option but not my choice.

The main railway station at Agra is the Agra Cantonment station. The journey takes approximately two hours from New Delhi by Shatabdi Express and, three hours by the Taj Express, though several other trains stop at Agra.

National highway #2 connects Delhi with Agra (via Mathura). Its about 200 kms away and takes three hours (or more if you stop for a meal on the way)
Several tour operators will offer coach services to Agra, the ones from Delhi will usually leave early morning.
The other option is to rent a car to take you to Agra and back, which helps if you want to be mobile while in Agra.
