SHATABI EXPRESS

There are 3 ways getting between Haridwar and Delhi.. We have done a train trip and a car trip.
The train is an express, and takes 4 hours. It is seating only- no beds- but very comfortable.
Shatabi does two trips a day- early morning and mid afternoon, either way.
The car journey was quite bearable (5 hours). Make sure that you get a driver that is safe, reliable and speaks a bit of English. It takes ages to get out of the Delhi traffic, but once one actually gets clear of the traffic, it is a good ride.
About halfway between Delhi and Haridwar we stopped at a "Dhaba" (rest stop) which totally amazed us. It is a great restuarant set in the most spectacular garden. Read in restuarant tips.

Buses also move between the cities, but take longer (6-7 hours). Airconditioned is a must.

Arriving by rail

I took the train to Haridwar from Delhi, using the Shatabdi express. This is a great train, far more comfortable than most others in the Indian rail system. The trip takes about five hours to cover the 215 km from Delhi. We went there and back in one day, which I don't really recommend! But such is life on a business trip!

You can see all sorts of interesting things at the Haridwar train station. In addition to quite a few monkeys running around trying to steal people's food, there was also a cow wandering around the platform. I'm not sure which train she was waiting for.
