Lucknow Flights

Lucknow is very well connected to Delhi. You can either take a Shatabdi train which is very convenient or take a flight. There are 2/3 flights everyday by Indian Airlines, Jet and Sahara.
Getting around in this city can be tricky. Comfortable public transport is not well developed. There are no local city cabs. Even autorickshwas dont operate. There are share cabs and jeeps which operators load up to max beore commencing journey. When in crowded places it is best to go by pedalled rickshaws than any other mode. If you are planning to go around a sight seeing day-trip it is best done by hiring a day cab.

Transportation is a problem for tourist. It's a good idea to hire a taxi for whole day, and go around places. It's safe and reliable too, as you can hire it from the hotel services.

The Lucknow shatabdi is a comfortable train with modern european coaches, and relatively fast. Food is provided on board (included in your ticket cost)

Lucknow is the State Capital of Uttar Pradesh which is around 500Kms from the Capital of India i.e New Delhi. Lucknow is famous for its historical monuments. A person can reach Lucknow either by Air, Train or bus. The cheapest and effective means of Transportation is Train and it took around six and half hours from New Delhi. However, if a person is short of time, he/she can travel by Air.

Well choose an appropriate mode for your self !

I reached Lucknow by train from Jhansi after visiting Khajuraho. At Jhansi, a train was waiting at the platform but it was not mine. It was full of people cramped up in Sleeper Class, one of the lowest classes on the Indian railways. It looked filthy from the outside and certainly not my cup of tea. My train arrived and I walked along the platform to find my carriage number. All the carriage numbers are shown in the middle of the train. S1, S2 etc are for Sleeper Class, A1 is for Air Con 2 tier class which was my class. I got on board after finding my carriage and found my bed berth - the upper birth of 2 on one side and 2 on the opposite side making a compartment of 4. The compartments are open with just a curtain for privacy. There are more upper and lower berths running down length-ways on the other side of the carriage. The upper berths are suspended by chains from the ceiling which are wrapped in padding and they also stop you from falling off. This was my first time in AC2 as all the other trains I had taken up until now had been Shatabdi trains - posher trains that just have seats in them. It was surprisingly very clean and we pulled out of Jhansi just 10 minutes late. This class is mostly made up of middle class Indian's who are well dressed and middle management businessmen in nice shirts and trousers, although all Indian males dress sense needs a lot to be desired! After about 10 minutes of leaving Jhansi, an attendant came along and dished out a sheet, pillow and blanket to make up as a bed even though it was 2pm. I arrived in Lucknow at about 8.30pm when it was dark (which I don't like doing) and took an autorickshaw to a hotel which turned out not be the right one (see my hotel tip for more).

I took a cycle rickshaw on a tour around the sights of Lucknow which was a bit slow but at least you get to see things. When you sit in the back of an auto rickshaw, the roof is quite low and you have to keep ducking below it in order to see anything. The sights are very spread out so walking around would be quite tiring.

Charbagh station was built in 1914 and incorporates the best of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture which makes it one of the best looking stations in India. I arrived here from Jhansi and took another train out from here to Allahabad. The journey to Allahabad took 6 hours to do just the 200km (120 miles) not helped by stopping at 2 stations for half-an-hour at each, the last one just 10km away from Allahabad itself.
