Staying in a secluded beach has many advantages like you are not being hurried by anything. Not even by hotel staffer who will force you to have early dinner and then go to relax. Since this is a guest house you have the liberty to relax at your will. You get plenty of tme to chat and laugh. What else you do on a holiday and on a beach? We enjoyed...more
As said in earlier tip, there is nothing to do but to leave yourself in the lap of mother nature! My every penny is well recovered just by watching my littleone swimming, running enjoying on the beach. I hardly get to chance to see her enjoying and growing in Calcutta! I leave at 8.30 and come back at around 9.30 / 10.00 on most of the day.Just...more
While in Fraserganj or Bakkhali there is not much things to do relaxing, not attending mobile phones, swimming, walking, or just watch the nature. Those who want to add little spice in their seclusion may take half day trip to "Jammu Dweep" or Jammu Island in the mouth of Bay of Bengal, a journey thru' sea by Fishing Boat for about 3/ 4 hrs to and...more
BAKKHALI HAS MANY HOTELS AND BARS WHERE YOU GET THE FOOD OF YOUR CHOICE. BUT IT MAY NOT BE OF GOOD STANDARD. BUT THERE ARE SMALL ROAD SIDE JOINTS WHERE YOU WILL GET FISH OF YOUR CHOICE. Many people do this and are doing everyday. But I felt it should get a name. We drove down to Diamond Harbour with friends and spend the day on the bank of the Ganges. It was real fun. To reach Frasergaj/ Bakkhali you can travel by road( 140KMs) or take EMU train upto Namkhana port then cross the Ferry ( see picture) and then by bus to Fraserganj 23KMs. But it will be better if have own vehicle or take a car taxi from Kolkata as hiring a taxi at the island may prove to be expensive.more
BAKKHALI IS 132 KMS ROAD DRIVE FROM THE CITY OF KOLKATA. LOCAL TRAINS ARE ALSO THERE BUT UPTO NAMKHANA, ABOUT 30KMS BEFORE. BUT THE TOURIST TRAVEL ONLY BY BUS OR CAR. There is nothing to buy except fish at Fraserganj. We stayed at the West Bengal Fisheries guest house with lots of fishing ponds around ( see picture). Many varieties of fishes are cultivated there. The best among them is Prawns ( It has 14 varieties such as Tiger Prawns, Scampi and others), Beckti and so on.. Lobsters are found only in the Sea.
You get the best quality Prawns here and not the export rejects, what we get in Kolkata city. The best is not sold but sent to Europe, USA or Japan for earning dollars! But you have to pay the days' export price. Well we bought two kilos of Tiger Prawns ( sorry no pictures of buying fish as I left the camera in the car and they packed the fish in ice so quickly that I could open only after I returned home) best quality for USD 12 per kilo ( 13/14 pieces per kilo). I cleaned it on return and Rakhi coocked it to perfection. It was excellent!
What to pay: We paid USD$ 12 per kilo for the days price!
As the people of Sunderbans live in forest with animals, snakes and poisonous insects they are still miles behind in terms of modern treatments, facilities and beliefs. They believe that the Snake Goddess ( Mother Monosa see piture) will protect them from snakes and Goddess Ban bibi will protect them from the Tigers. At the begining of monsoon they perform Manasa Puja or worship Goddess of Snake with much fan fare. We also had the opportunity to see and participate in one such puja( see picture) organised by the Fishermen's village.
Our participation encouraged them so much that they treated us with tea and fruits!
PLEASE ALWAYS BARGAIN ABOUT THE ROOM RATE AT ALL THE HOTELS. THEY WILL TELL YOU A FANCY PRICE BUT YOU WILL FIND THAT PROBABLY YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON STAYING IN THAT HOTEL. ASK FOR A BARGAIN AND ASK VERY CLEARLY ABOUT CHECK OUT TIME 9 ELSE HE MAY PUT IT 8AM IN PLACE OF 12NOON)BEFORE FINALIZING THE DEAL. THESE HOTELS REMAIN EMPTY THROGHOUT THE YEAR EXCEPT FOR HOLIDAYS OR WEEK END. THE CALCUTTA CROWD IS NOW GOING TO DIGHA AS THE ROAD AND TRAIN LINE HAS DEVELOPED A LOT.
Unique Suggestions: PLEASE INSIST TO GIVE YOU 24HRS CHECK OUT TIME OR UPTO 12 NOON AS USUAL. PLEASE ALWAYS ASK FOR CLEAN SHEET AND TOWELS IN THE ROOM. SINCE THE HOTELS DONOT RUN WELL THEY ADOPT VARIOUS TRICKS TO GET MORE MONEY FROM THE TOURIST.
If you are a nature lover you will love this tip and place. Fraserganj Beach is also the home for famous Rad Crabs! They house in millions here. Sorry I could not take any shot as they are highly camera nd human shy. But if you have the patience to sit for hours and have a camera with good zoomyou can capture them. The baby crabs can be captured...more
