As we are not exactly "night-spot" people, Richard and I always enjoy a quiet evening at the famous Fairlawn Hotel- it has a wonderfully eccentric atmosphere and is green all over. Its roof and garden chairs are green. Its balcony balastrade is painted green- The walls are white. The outdoor beer-garden is always crowded with happy travellers, and it is set back from the noise & traffic in Sudder Street. We have spent many evenings there, having a beer, chat and dinner. The atmosphere is as festive as the colored lights hanging in the huge overhanging trees. Its a perfect place to spend an evening, chilling after a hectic day on the streets of Kolkata.
There is a snack menu, or one can can have dinner in the dining room- the food is English- as is the decor inside the Hotel.
The Fairlawn has been around forever.It is family run, and is filled with bizarre memorabilia from the Raj. Every square inch on the walls is filled with pictures, artifacts and posters.
It has accomodation available- but is always booked out.
It is situated in the backpacker area in Sudder Street.
WHEN THE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE "CITY OF JOY" WAS MADE IN KOLKATA, THE CAST AND CREW STAYED AT THE FAIRLAWN, AND THE BEERGARDEN WAS THEIR FAVORITE NIGHT-SPOT.

Hands down the best club in Calcutta. Come here for ambience and expect to pay a lot of money. As around the world (and sooo unfair), women get in free ... men pay Rs. 250-Rs.1000 depending on the night.
Strictly chi-chi upper echlons of Calcutta come here ... but hey, the cover is worth it ... there is a very good chance you will run into a Miss World or a Miss Universe ... or at the very least, a Miss India :)
Downstairs is the main bar/lounge and the dance floor ... upstairs is a more intimate lounge with the best every bed :) ... becomes a VIP area on Saturday night with membership requirements.

As I have already told you, Calcutta has ceased to be the place it used to, once upon a time. Even we at times find it difficult to uynderstand what happened in the city in such a short span of time. Just as a new child is born out of a mother's womb, Kolkata was born out of Calcutta. Just as insects shed their exoskeletons in order to grow, Calcutta cast off its old shell to become Kolkata - one of the hotspots of modern India. Not only has the city changed, but the change is evident in the lifestyle and the attitude of the citizens too. Shops have been replaced by supermarkets and one-stop shops, malls and complexes. Movie theatres have been replaced by multiplexes; bars, pubs and restaurants throng the city.
The days when Tantra seemed to be the only pub in the city are gone. The London Pub(at the Golden Park), Incognito(at The Taj Bengal), Magnolia(at Park Street) and lots of other nightclubs have added a new dimension to the city's nightlife.
In fact, so much is the magnitude of the change that has taken place, that evening seems to start in this new Kolkata just from 9pm. everyday.
So, when you visit Kolkata(and not Calcutta) the next time, be prepared to experience this change.
People usually prefer denims and Western casuals for evening out. For nightclubs and pubs any light casualwear is adviseable. The earlier myth of about Kolkata nightlife no longer exists. Now Kolkata has number of nightclubs almost 8 today. almost all star hotels like , the taj Bengal, hotel Hindustan international, the park, the golden park all has a night club with very well stocked bar, and extremely good eateries.
Temporary membership is given to the boarders and foreigners.
Please check with the nightclub you are going to. Information available with daily newspaper. However, mostly informal but latest out fit.

Someplace Else used to be a club in Park Hotel ... nowdays its a regular watering hole for the expat and middle-upper class folks of the city. It has great bands on the weekends which play both Indian and classic rock. Be warned though ... like any other hotel-bars, it's expensive ... expect to pay around USD 12 for a double gin n' tonic.

Whoever love to partying all the time, may be you can join them to have a little a little party or do the campire as Hampi use to be one of the favorite spot for backpackers.. as they can do and easyly get smokes. ONE CAN GO FOR DISCOTHEQUES OVER HERE . BUT THERE ARE A FEW ONLY IN HOTELS LIKE THE TAJ, PARK,LONDON PUB,H.H.I IS HAVING ONE TOO .
THE NIGHT LIFE IS JUST RESTRICTED TO DISCS ONLY.
