Fairlawn Hotel Beer Garden: Friendly, Fun & Casual

Enjoyable evening at Fairlawn HotelBeer garden
    1 more image

As we are not exactly "night-spot" people, Richard and I always enjoy a quiet evening at the famous Fairlawn Hotel- it has a wonderfully eccentric atmosphere and is green all over. Its roof and garden chairs are green. Its balcony balastrade is painted green- The walls are white. The outdoor beer-garden is always crowded with happy travellers, and it is set back from the noise & traffic in Sudder Street. We have spent many evenings there, having a beer, chat and dinner. The atmosphere is as festive as the colored lights hanging in the huge overhanging trees. Its a perfect place to spend an evening, chilling after a hectic day on the streets of Kolkata.
There is a snack menu, or one can can have dinner in the dining room- the food is English- as is the decor inside the Hotel.
The Fairlawn has been around forever. It is family run, and is filled with bizarre memorabilia from the Raj. Every square inch on the walls is filled with pictures, artifacts and posters.
It has accomodation available- but is always booked out.
It is situated in the backpacker area in Sudder Street.
WHEN THE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE "CITY OF JOY" WAS MADE IN KOLKATA, THE CAST AND CREW STAYED AT THE FAIRLAWN, AND THE BEERGARDEN WAS THEIR FAVORITE NIGHT-SPOT.

    Dress Code: CASUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tantra, Park Hotel: Best Place to Dance

by arikde Written May 20, 2003

    Friends @ Tantra Dance Floor

Hands down the best club in Calcutta. Come here for ambience and expect to pay a lot of money. As around the world (and sooo unfair), women get in free ... men pay Rs. 250-Rs.1000 depending on the night.

Strictly chi-chi upper echlons of Calcutta come here ... but hey, the cover is worth it ... there is a very good chance you will run into a Miss World or a Miss Universe ... or at the very least, a Miss India :)

Downstairs is the main bar/lounge and the dance floor ... upstairs is a more intimate lounge with the best every bed :) ... becomes a VIP area on Saturday night with membership requirements.

Dress Code: Trendy. Its all about black. Ethnic is in. You can wear Jeans and sneakers, but you will stand out.

Temporary membership is given to the boarders and foreigners.

London Pub or Incognito: Some of the best places for partying at night

by Kumarjit Written Nov 28, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Typical view of Kolkata at night(10 pm.)

As I have already told you, Calcutta has ceased to be the place it used to, once upon a time. Even we at times find it difficult to uynderstand what happened in the city in such a short span of time. Just as a new child is born out of a mother's womb, Kolkata was born out of Calcutta. Just as insects shed their exoskeletons in order to grow, Calcutta cast off its old shell to become Kolkata - one of the hotspots of modern India. Not only has the city changed, but the change is evident in the lifestyle and the attitude of the citizens too. Shops have been replaced by supermarkets and one-stop shops, malls and complexes. Movie theatres have been replaced by multiplexes; bars, pubs and restaurants throng the city.
The days when Tantra seemed to be the only pub in the city are gone. The London Pub(at the Golden Park), Incognito(at The Taj Bengal), Magnolia(at Park Street) and lots of other nightclubs have added a new dimension to the city's nightlife.
In fact, so much is the magnitude of the change that has taken place, that evening seems to start in this new Kolkata just from 9pm. everyday.
So, when you visit Kolkata(and not Calcutta) the next time, be prepared to experience this change.

Dress Code: People usually prefer denims and Western casuals for evening out. For nightclubs and pubs any light casualwear is adviseable.

My Sister and I @ Someplace Else

Someplace Else used to be a club in Park Hotel ... nowdays its a regular watering hole for the expat and middle-upper class folks of the city. It has great bands on the weekends which play both Indian and classic rock. Be warned though ... like any other hotel-bars, it's expensive ... expect to pay around USD 12 for a double gin n' tonic.

    Dress Code: Casual Relaxed, Ethnic.

    Super Pub: Dark and Gloomy

    by global-drifter Written Nov 9, 2010

After dinner I don't just head to any pub, I head to Super Pub, which is located nearby (Mizra Ghalib street). Its an old style pub, with all waiters dressed in formal attire. A 650ml Kingfisher 'super heavy beer' is only 95 rupees and the air-con is heavenly. It is dimly lit inside, without even a window, but all of this is welcome after slogging it out in humidity all day. It is seemingly popular with Indians only, as apart from that chap in the mirror, there isn't a westerner in sight!

After a few 'super heavy beers,' I find myself stumbling back in the direction of Sudder street. Once there, I'm offered Manali Cream in a matter of seconds. The hustlers and dealers descend upon me like vultures on a carcass, it must be the long hair and beard. Like my Dad says "if you look, dress and act like a bum - what do you expect?

Dress Code: Just make sure you're wearing shoes and a shirt, and you should be fine.

    > Convenient ? No, becasuse ever1 has to be there at the same time, no late-comes. Wat i did was called every1 at my place and we all went together. Surprisingly ever1 turned up.
    > they will organize everthng for you so no headach about the ice or the catering. I had snacks, lunch and booz and a simple dj set-up.

how was it in the end? fabulous! all the pain and expences were worth it. We went past Dakhineshwar, belur, and under the bridges. Check out the pic.

Dress Code: its you private party so wear anything. But i would suggest wear everthng short if you want to feel the breeze.

"Tantra" nightclub at "The Park Hotel": busting a move - a la indian style...

by redheaney Written Nov 19, 2006

we found ourselves at "Tantra" nightclub in the Park Hotel, to which we were granted free admission - because we were single ladies..... (ask no questions!) It was really strange and if you didn't know better, you really could have been in a dance club, anywhere in the world (save for all of the Indians and the music, of course) Most of the music was Western, with their own Hindi/Bengali dance mixes thrown in aswell! We, of course, hit the dance floor with a vengeance, to show them all how it is supposed to be done! There were very few Westerners there - maybe 3 others besides ourselves, and though numerous Indian men came up to "chat" to us, it really wasn't nearly as bad as one might have imagined. The club closed at 4am - but we left well before that. It was a fun (albeit different) night out.

Dress Code: none that i was aware of... all were dressed in very "westernized" attire

  • VENOM (DISCOTHEQUE): KOLKATA NIGHTLIFE - IT ROCKS

    What: Opening of Venom.
Where: Fort Knox, the Jewellery mall on 6 Camac Street.
    When: January 28, 06.
Concept: Dazzling lights, synchronized sound and sight and a big dance floor? Venom, on the eighth floor, is all set to give a new high to party hoppers of the city. “When we were conceptualizing the place, the first thing we kept in mind was the space. Most party people complained of lack of space at other night clubs. Second comes the novelty factor. The music, the milieu and the make, everything in a new night club should be slightly different from the other night clubs,” said Bunty Sethi, proprietor of Venom.

The Star Chamber: The 3,000 sq ft night club has an exclusive area for its platinum members with an exclusive bar and personalized television screens.

The music: The console at Venom boasts three popular DJs of Calcutta? DJ Sumedh, DJ Sethi and DJ Vicky who has made music at places like Anti-Clock and Winning Streak. “The commercial Hindi and English songs always work with the party crowd in Calcutta.
